You can see Robin and Ms. Lynda in front of all the unboxed donations! Robin is our Travelers Aid and Intake Manager and works hard to help people flee domestic violence. The Travelers Aid program provides free travel for people in Charlotte who are fleeing domestic violence. Robin identifies and confirms the safe haven (often with family and friends outside of Charlotte), prepares the traveler for their trip, and follows up after their arrival. Volunteers are absolutely critical for our Free Tax Prep CLT program. Community Link staff train about 70 volunteers on how to be a tax preparer or a greeter for the program. We coordinate with 8 partner sites across Mecklenburg County to help low-to-moderate income people get their taxes prepared for free. Justine Reed started preparing taxes in 2016 during her college days at Armstrong State University, “I had never done taxes before, so I wasn’t sure, but I ended up going to a training. Everyone welcomed me in... kinda like how it is at Community Link. Everyone was very helpful and I learned how to volunteer." “I did taxes up there until I graduated. 2017 was my last time preparing.. I was in a transitional period. I couldn't make another commitment but I realized that I liked helping people... I was in Savannah for Christmas and I saw my friend who got me into the Free Tax Prep program down there. I told her that I would love to get back into that.. and she got me connected to the Free Tax Prep site in Charlotte. I reached out to Community Link. I knew NO ONE in Charlotte… I was so ready to get out and meet people." I work full-time in finance not in human services or nonprofit work. This is the only time, during Free Tax Prep CLT, that I feel fulfilled with what I want to do. I’m so energized by the volunteer work. I’m having so much fun.” Justine has been working with the Community Link Free Tax Prep CLT program since 2018. She is now one of our Site Coordinators and she is an absolute joy to be around. We love our volunteers and deeply appreciate the impact that Justine has made over the years! Meet Ms. Mackey, a CMS teacher and Community Link client, who closed on her home in Charlotte last month! Our time with Ms. Mackey spans a decade: “Community Link has been doing my taxes for 8 or 10 years now.” When she wanted to become a homeowner, she decided to take part in our Homeownership Education and Counseling program. “The process itself was perfectly laid out. I knew each step of the way… Community Link allowed me to know that I can do it. They set the path.. it’s like they did all the homework for us. If I just stayed on course and did what they asked me to do then my dream would become a reality and it did. I think they were the helping hand and the link.. Community Link linked me up with becoming a homeowner and I’m truly grateful for the experience.” Kecia Mackey is one of about 300 people in our Homeownership Education and Counseling program. We work with thousands of low-income households in North Carolina each year to prepare tax returns for free.
