Today at 11 AM, we celebrated a pivotal moment in our community’s growth with the groundbreaking of a new development at 916 MLK Jr Blvd. This project marks the beginning of construction on 16 affordable two-bedroom apartments, designed to provide stable housing for families exiting homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless. ?? It’s been an impactful week, and I’m so grateful for the opportunities to contribute to meaningful work in our community: ? Monday: Attended the CHSA, CHSA Development, and Housing Savannah annual meeting, collaborating with leaders in housing and development. ? Tuesday: Supported the KIAH Campus at the MPC meeting, advancing a project that holds great promise for Savannah’s future. ? Wednesday: Attended the HPC meeting where CHSA’s non profit partner, Savannah Local Initiatives (SLI ) received approval to build two new single-family homes in Cuyler-Brownville. ? Thursday: Attended the ZBA meeting for zoning approval for KIAH Campus and finished the day at the City of Savannah Council meeting, where they approved a $5.5M allocation from the SAHF to construct 16 two-bedroom apartments for small families exiting homelessness. ? Friday: Took a “day off”…sort of! Volunteered with a nonprofit on a renovation project, reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones. This week has been a reminder of the impact we can have when we work together toward positive change. Housing is a basic need that is out of reach for many. How can we close the gap? The SAHF is an innovating way for individuals and entities to make investments for our local communities.
Enterprise held a convening in Savannah yesterday to share about the importance of housing trust funds in Georgia to address affordable housing needs at both the state and local levels - and the opportunities for increasing funding to our housing trust funds. Many thanks to Martin Fretty from the City of Savannah, Anita Smith-Dixon of Community Housing Services Agency, Stephanie Kaple of the Savannah-Chatham Interagency Council on Homelessness (ICH), Alison Goldey of the Chatham Savannah Land Bank Authority, and Laura Lane McKinnon of Housing Savannah, Inc. for joining us to share about the Savannah Affordable Housing Fund and all of the important work to address housing affordability and prevent homlessness happening in your community. I also want to thank my Enterprise colleague Mahala Baker, M.P.A. for helping to make this event a great success!
