Meet Diana Espinoza, our amazing Resident Services Coordinator! She's a proud Marine mom, dog lover, and One Piece enthusiast who loves making a difference in our community. ?? Diana loves her work with CHIP because of the sense of fulfillment she receives from helping others. She connects them with crucial services, researches local community organizations to learn more about how she can better support residents, and even judges baking contests! ?? Diana, and our Resident Services team, often organize activities for children to play and socialize at our rental properties. Their favorite things to do include playing games and creating arts and crafts projects! However, there are many kids across several properties, meaning our supplies can run out quickly and our games suffer from the usual wear and tear after receiving so much love over the years. ?? Let's help her continue this important work by donating to CHIP's Giving Tuesday campaign. Your contribution will help us provide essential supplies for kids' activities. Sheila McQuaid loves food, but even more, she loves seeing it nourish our communities. As Project Director of the 530 Food Rescue Coalition (530FRC), she connects food donors with nonprofits, making sure good food reaches those who need it most. Her work has always centered around food and communities. "I like building relationships and getting to know my community better! I have learned so much from our food donor partners, nonprofit partners and our amazing Food Rescue Hero volunteers. I also like that no two days are ever the same, and the challenge of making sure that food donations go to sites that can utilize them. This is my favorite project that I have ever worked on – there is no downside to food rescue!"?? The 530 Food Rescue Coalition (530FRC) believes that good food belongs to people, not landfills. 530FRC is an innovative food recovery project in Butte County working to save perfectly good food from going to waste. Using a custom-built app, they mobilize volunteers to transport food donations from food retailers to non-profits.???? CHIP was lucky enough to be one of the first organizations to partner with 530FRC and the partnership has grown so beautifully in the last couple of years! If you take a look at the numbers, CHIP and 530FRC have saved over 31,000 pounds of food from going to waste! We can't wait to see the future impact of this partnership on the environment and the lives of our residents.?? In case you didn't know, November 17-23 is Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. This is a great time to not only spread the word about the resources 530FRC provides our communities, but to consider donating or volunteering your time to support their mission. Help reduce food waste and battle hunger in our communities by becoming a Food Rescue Hero today! Maybe we'll see you carrying a box into one of our rental properties soon! Download their app by searching "530 Food Rescue".?? FHLBank San Francisco was honored to join U.S. Rep. Doug LaMalfa in hosting a roundtable discussion focused on affordable housing solutions in Northern California. ??We joined leaders in community organizations, financial institutions, #AffordableHousing, and other stakeholders to discuss how enhancing public-private partnership can play a key role in addressing the housing affordability crisis, specifically in rural areas of Northern California that are vulnerable to wildfires. "The Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco is a reliable partner in the community that can enable the ideas coming from the roundtable through our broad and deep network of members," said our CEO Alanna McCargo. Kelley Dodge is part of CHIP's Board of Directors, but she holds many roles as an active member of her communities in Corning and Chico! Even though she grew up in Chico, Corning is where she built community as an adult through connections with the Corning Rotary Club, the Corning Police Department, and local youth sports.? For Kelley, home is agriculture, strong bonds, sports, and the Corning Christmas Parade, things that exist through the actions and support of people who take an active interest in their communities.?? Kelley knows a stigma around the self-help program exists but thinks people would feel differently if they saw how helping groups of people build affordable homes creates communities, neighbors, and friends across the North Valley.?? She is especially proud of CHIP's communities, the results of people's hard work, and the quality of the materials she sees in people's homes. "When we have board meetings, I love seeing and speaking with people who feel a sense of community. It's one of my favorite parts about being a CHIP board member." Keep up the wonderful work, Kelley!?? #CHIPHousing #AffordableHousing #CHIPCommunity

The California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness (CASPEH) is the largest representative study of homelessness in the United States. The study provides a comprehensive look at homelessness in California by focusing on who experiences homelessness, pathways to homelessness, experiences during homelessness, barriers to housing, and more. One of the study's policy recommendations includes increasing affordable housing options for extremely low-income households. The study explains, "The median monthly household income in the six months prior to homelessness across all CASPEH participants was $960. Almost all participants met criteria to be considered “extremely low-income” or making less than 30% of the Area Median Income. Participants’ inability to afford housing was both the underlying cause of homelessness and the primary barrier to their returning to housing. This finding was true throughout California, not only in the high-cost coastal regions."
