The impact of pandemics like COVID-19 and Ebola go far beyond the disease itself. They also disrupt and overload hospitals and clinics, with the potential of catastrophic breakdowns in essential services. But our research shows that when crisis hits — community health workers can reduce the burden on hospitals and clinics and maintain usual standards of essential health services. So long as they are set up for success. Adquately salaried, skilled, supervised, and supplied #proCHWs are essential to ensuring our health systems are resilient enough to face future health crises. https://lnkd.in/eA8uuwVc

"Community health workers (CHWs) play a pivotal role in improving child health outcomes and fostering community engagement, particularly in under-resourced areas. By providing health education, conducting routine screenings, promoting immunization, and facilitating access to healthcare services, we empower our communities to adopt practices that improve children’s health. And we build trust enabling effective monitoring, follow-up, and advocacy." Following on from #WorldChildrensDay, Masautso Mataya shares the vital role of #proCHWs in children's health.

WHO estimate there will be a shortage of 10 million health workers by 2030. In order to achieve health for all we need to invest in our workforce, because medical innovations are useless without someone to deliver them. #proCHW https://chwi.jnj.com/

As a member of the WHO CSO Commission, the Coalition recently contributed to the development of the #COP29 Special Report on Climate Change and Health following the adoption of the #WHA77 resolution on climate change and health. The report now states: "Health and care workers, in both formal and informal sectors, play a critical role in protecting and promoting community and population health in response to climate change" when an equipped, well-supported workforce." So, we know that CHWs play an important role in the response and preparedness of health systems to deal with the climate change challenges ahead. But, to be set up to succeed, CHWs must be salaried, skilled, supplied, supervised, and integrated into robust health systems. Or in other words, must be recognized as professionals (#proCHWs). It's time to make this the standard. REPORT: https://lnkd.in/eM7tUzQx

I can’t help but chuckle at a recurring theme: At Community Health Impact Coalition, we often get asked to review CHW policies and guidance. ??♂? Only to find that they repeatedly cite 'evidence' that says the exact opposite of what the authors intend! Here are three classic examples: #ProCHWs #ReadTheFinePrint ??

"Natural disasters only make our communities more desperate for support that only community health workers can provide.” – margaret odera, community health worker & advocate, Kenya On this #COP29 Health Day, we honor the work of #CHWs like Margaret. They are already serving as critical responders to the health impacts of climate change, including disrupted care from natural disasters, disease outbreaks like cholera, malnutrition exacerbated by drought, and more. In this climate & health event recap from #UNGA79, hear from CHWs and health leaders ? https://bit.ly/3UO92Cu.
