At this year’s Atlanta Science Festival, STE(A)M Truck brought an engaging, hands-on experience to elementary, middle school, high school students, and adults—blending science, sustainability, and creativity in a unique way. Students and their families stepped into the world of natural paint-making, using the vibrant pigments of everyday items. -What Students Learned & Engaged In- Students kicked off the session with an Acids & Bases Challenge, using red cabbage as a natural pH indicator to test mystery household liquids. This interactive experiment set the stage for a deep dive into the chemistry of natural pigments and how everyday ingredients react with different substances. Then, the real magic began! Students got hands-on creating sustainable paints using dehydrated spinach, carrots, beetroot powder, spirulina & coffee grounds. To thicken their mixtures, they experimented with flour & egg yolk powder, adjusting consistency to create the perfect texture. Once their earth-friendly paints were ready, students let their creativity flow, painting unique canvases to take home! -Instructor Reflections- “The best part? Watching students get messy, experiment, and walk away with their own artwork!” “The energy in the room was electric! Parents and students alike were fascinated by how everyday kitchen ingredients could transform into artistic tools. The activity reminded me of childhood experiments—mud pies, mixing colors, and just the joy of creating!” This experience showed students that science & art are more connected than we often realize. Using low-cost, sustainable materials, they learned that creativity isn’t about expensive supplies—it’s about exploration, innovation & curiosity.

Over the past three years, STE(A)M Truck has been proud to partner with the Gwinnett Regional Science, Engineering + Innovation Fair, bringing hands-on STEM learning to elementary, middle, and high school students across Gwinnett County Public Schools. This incredible collaboration provided students with engaging, interactive experiences designed to spark curiosity, reinforce scientific concepts, and inspire future innovators. During this partnership, STE(A)M Truck engaged students from 81 elementary schools and 29 middle schools, offering immersive STEAM activities while they awaited the judging of their science fair projects. Our goal was to enhance their learning experience by providing real-world applications of STEM concepts in a fun and engaging way. What Did Students Experience? Students participated in exciting, hands-on activities designed to introduce them to key STEAM principles: ?? Sphero Robotics – Students learned coding and computational thinking by programming a Sphero robot to navigate through mazes, challenging their problem-solving skills. ?? Makey Makey Circuits – Participants explored electric circuits and conductivity by creating innovative projects using everyday materials and interactive technology. ?? Stomp Rockets – Future engineers experimented with aerospace concepts by designing and launching their own rockets, testing variables like force and trajectory. These activities were carefully designed to provide engaging, inquiry-based learning that encouraged students to think critically, collaborate, and explore scientific principles in an interactive environment. Instructor Reflections: Our STE(A)M Truck instructors saw firsthand the excitement and curiosity sparked by these hands-on experiences. One instructor shared: “The middle school students loved the thrill of building and launching rockets—jumping as high as they could to give their creations maximum lift! Meanwhile, the younger students took their time carefully constructing and designing their rockets, taking pride in the creative process. Given the nature of the science fair, it was wonderful to provide students with something interactive and hands-on to engage with throughout the day.” Events like the Gwinnett Science & Engineering Fair play a crucial role in fostering early STEM engagement and providing students with real-world learning experiences. By integrating hands-on STE(A)M activities into the event, we ensure that students not only observe science but actively participate in it, developing critical skills in problem-solving, collaboration, and innovation. We are grateful to the Gwinnett Science Fair team for their dedication to STEM education and for giving students a space to explore, experiment, and grow as future innovators.
