Good news for a Monday! Two years ago, we spotlighted Central Westmoreland Habitat for Humanity during our annual Critical Needs Alert online fundraising event to support nonprofits in the Westmoreland County region. Last week, the home that was under construction during a segment of KDKA-TV's Pittsburgh Today Live has welcomed its new owners, thanks to the work of Executive Director Courtney Guerrieri and her dedicated crews of volunteers. The nation’s 250th birthday is less than two years away, and the Fort Ligonier chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is ready for the major milestone. As its commitment to the America250 celebration campaign, the Ligonier-based DAR group has drawn public attention to the little-known Fort Preservation, a fortification near the Loyalhanna Creek that played a part in defense of the area against the British and their Native American allies during the Revolutionary War. The chapter’s fundraising efforts supplemented a $15,000 award from the Ligonier Valley Endowment of The Pittsburgh Foundation.

Hurricane Helene made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane in the Florida Big Bend region late Thursday, Sept. 26, bringing with it heavy rainfall, intense winds and flooding as it moved through several states in the south.?Communities impacted by Hurricane Helene will be grappling with the effects of the disaster for months and years to come. Dressed in all white, competitors participated Sunday in the final scheduled Westmoreland Croquet Club Tournament. “We would love to keep it going but it’s just time,” said Amy Dicesere, event organizer. “It is a great community event and I loved being involved for the past 34 years. These people are my family. It’s a tradition.” The proceeds are handled by the Community Foundation of Westmoreland County, with several different organizations receiving funds each year. - TribLIVE Those orgs include: Greensburg YMCA; Sage's Army, Inc.: Recovery; Ashley Gongaware Kertes Fund; Central Westmoreland Habitat for Humanity; MIRACLE LEAGUE OF WESTERN PA; Laurel Highlands Workforce and Opportunity Center.?
