We had the privilege of taking a tour of an HIV Cure Research Lab at UNC Chapel Hill Here are 10 things we learned: 1. The UNC Lab is focused on how we can get rid of all HIV virus from the human body through a process called latency reversal. 2. When people take ART drugs, the drugs are very good at controlling the virus in the body. People who take ART drugs are often able to reach an “undetectable” (very low level) viral load and will not pass the virus to their partner 3. UNC researchers are trying to understand how and at what point does a portion of HIV virus go into “latency,” or go to sleep and into hiding places in the body. 4. UNC Researchers are working on the “shock and kill” method: They want to wake up latent HIV virus by “shocking” it awake and then killing the remaining HIV virus for total elimination from the body. 5. They are currently only doing research on animal and human cells and not doing human trials (a human trial is when a group of humans receive a new intervention and compare the results to humans who do not receive the intervention). 6. There are different reactions to latency reversal agents and gene interactions in animal cells as compared to human cells so we need more research on how those compounds/drugs/chemicals would impact human cells. 7. They want to understand why HIV virus goes into latency because when or if someone stops taking ART drugs, the latent (sleeping) HIV virus will wake back up and start replicating and spreading in the body. That’s why people have to stay on ART drugs to control the virus and keep it from replicating and spreading. 8. UNC Scientists want to know: Where HIV virus is resting and hiding, which drugs are the best at waking HIV virus up, what combination of strategies would be the most effective at eliminating the remaining latent HIV virus from the body? 9. What UNC scientists know: HIV virus is latent in the lymph nodes, brain, and gut and possibly other parts of the body. 10. There are some chemical compounds that work better than others to find latent HIV virus and wake up or reverse HIV latency #Blackandstem #stem #stemtok #HIV #HIVcure #research #science

We’re super proud to be managing the recruitment and engagement efforts for this project in collaboration with Nisha Gottfredson O'Shea at RTI International and Tamara Taggart at The George Washington University School of Public Health. Did you attend a public middle or high school in Moore, Vance, or Person Counties in North Carolina between 2002-2006? You may remember taking a survey about your health behaviors and relationships as a part of a UNC Study. We are doing a follow-up study to see how you’re doing! Eligible participants who complete our online survey will get a $50 gift card. Your responses will help us learn more about health in your community. Go to www.nclifestudy.com to learn more!

Hey! Could you help us out by sharing this flyer and the text below with your networks? We are a research team from UNC Chapel Hill and George Washington University and are reaching out to ask if you would be interested in participating in a new study that seeks to connect experiences that people had as teenagers with the experiences they are having now as adults: the NC Life Study. This project will only involve filling out a one-hour survey, with the potential to participate in other optional research activities, such as interviews. Participants who complete the survey will receive a $50 gift card for their time. Eligible participants are those who attended public schools in Vance, Moore, or Person Counties in NC between 2002-2006. If you are interested in participating in this project, please visit https://lnkd.in/gbZfx3Y7

If you have struggled with sleep, now we know that structural racism plays a major part in exacerbating our stress and impacting our sleep. Representation in research matters because it provides evidence of our experiences and hopefully leads to solutions.

Sleep is critical to our health! This excellent study by Atheendar Venkataramani, MD, PhD; Elizabeth F. Bair, MS; Jacob Bor, ScD; Chandra L. Jackson, PhD, MS; Ichiro Kawachi, MBChB, PhD; Jooyung Lee, PhD; Andrew V. Papachristos, PhD; Alexander Tsai, MD, PhD published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that Black individuals living in US states where officer-involved killings of unarmed Black individuals occurred had statistically significantly worse sleep after these killings when compared to Black individuals living in other states where killings did not occur. This important study adds to growing scientific evidence of the link between #StructuralRacism and #PoorHealth. It also highlights our need for multi-sectoral strategies, including criminal justice reforms, to create healthy living conditions that promote #Health and #HealthEquity.?#HotInHealthEquity https://lnkd.in/eH_GbtqT

Community Expert Solutions Inc has been working to engage Black communities in all aspects of HIV, from prevention, treatment and cure to clinical trials for more than 10 years. We are committed to ensuring representation and access are at the core of every project we support with our institutional partners. It’s not enough to simply have Black participation, but we need Black decision-makers shaping the future of how we end the HIV epidemic in Black communities. This National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, we continue to commit to ensuring representation at every level until we end the epidemic ???? #NBHAAD #BlackHIV #clinicaltrials #research #representationmatters

Over the last 40 years, Black communities have continued to be disproportionately impacted by HIV/AIDS. Even with the greatest scientific advances in preventing, diagnosing, and treating HIV, these benefits aren’t experienced equally by everyone. In fact, in 2021, Black people made up 40% of the over 1 million people living with HIV in the U.S. and 40% of new HIV diagnoses in the same year. Black women accounted for 54% of new HIV diagnoses among women in 2021, despite comprising just 14% of women in the U.S. Improving health outcomes requires understanding these health disparities and addressing the inequities in the health care system. That’s why it’s so important to support all efforts to increase federal and state funding for public health programs, address HIV stigma and discrimination through improved education, support Black-led and Black-serving community-based organizations and remove barriers in accessing HIV prevention, treatment and care. On National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, we must reflect on the progress we’ve made and keep in mind the work that still needs to be done to advance health equity and create a healthier world for everyone, everywhere. #NBHAAD #HealthEquity
