Let's turn our gaze from the political theater in Washington to the actual work of higher education. In San Antonio, Texas, the Alamo Colleges District is beefing up counseling for community college students, working to ensure that students are able to align academic choices with career goals, and pushing to facilitate credit transfer for those pursuing bachelor's degrees in nearby public universities. They call it "guided pathways." An enlightening article on all this below from Robb Mandelbaum in Bloomberg News. Good things are happening. Love these ideas, and love most the focus on serving students maximally at all points in life. It *really* helps when 2-year colleges and 4-year colleges and universities can get on the same page. Look, there are no miracle policies that fix everything overnight. There is only hard work and dedication to making systems work better to help students get where they want to go. (It takes funding, too.) Alamo Colleges, building America. Community colleges, building America. #HigherEdBuildsAmerica The American Council on Education urges all friends of higher education to join together. Now is the moment. Coalitions matter. Let your elected representatives, state and federal, know where we stand.
A recent newsletter from The Chronicle of Higher Education focuses on campuses as a career launchpad and features CCRC's Judith Scott-Clayton on the topic of work-study. It’s not altogether clear that a work-study job?has?to be connected to a career goal, Scott-Clayton said. Research on the program suggests that one of its key values is “as a kind of starter job,” she said, “this professional setting where it’s explicitly acknowledged that your studies still come first.”

Through April 2025, Strada Education Foundation is surveying students at public four-year and two-year institutions in every state to understand their experiences with two effective practices: education-to-career guidance and work-based learning. Institutions who participate in the 2025 survey will receive their students’ results and accompanying data files. Aggregated student results at the state level will be publicly reported in October 2025 as part of the State Opportunity Index (https://lnkd.in/g2JSAbMW).
