Families struggling with financial stability often face impossible choices—sacrificing healthy food to cover rent, medication, childcare, and transportation. One of our members shared that before joining Food Club, she often had to forgo healthy food to prioritize other essential needs. When Food Club opened in 2021, she immediately signed up - and shared that now, she no longer feels forced to choose between nutritious food, rent, and the other resources she needs for a healthy, fulfilling life. This Giving Tuesday, you can help more of our neighbors find the healthy food, resource connection, and financial empowerment they need to move forward with hope.. Thanks to a generous matching gift, every donation up to $50,000 will be doubled, ensuring your impact goes twice as far! Everyone deserves a stable home and the peace of mind that comes with feeling safe. This holiday season, our team is partnering with over 250 unhoused neighbors - meeting urgent needs while tackling barriers to find safe, stable housing. Last year, we celebrated alongside one guest who spent his first winter in his new apartment. When living outdoors, he was filled with worry - where he would eat, how to keep warm, and how to stay healthy. But last winter was different. Instead of fear, he looked forward with excitement - knowing he had a safe home, a community of support, and access to good food through Food Club and the Community Kitchen. Your gift this #GivingTuesday can help our team make more stories of hope possible. Thanks to a group of generous supporters and our friends at Meijer, gifts up to $50,000 will be MATCHED to provide double the impact for our community. We’re delighted to share that last week, two Action House volunteers were honored with the prestigious Governor’s Service Award! As Community Kitchen volunteers for more than 30 years, Wayne and Linda Pynnonen have helped build the welcoming, compassionate environment that the Kitchen is known for. Their dedication goes beyond serving meals; Wayne and Linda have become trusted friends to many neighbors who walk through the doors. Each interaction—whether it’s a familiar smile or a quick conversation—builds a sense of belonging that extends beyond the meal itself. For Wayne and Linda, volunteering isn’t just about providing food, but fostering a community where each person feels seen and valued. Wayne and Linda remind us of the impact that each of us can have when we turn compassion into action. Thank you for your incredible legacy of service! Our friends at g2 revolution recently donated cleaning supplies to Food Club! Their gift of of laundry detergent and household cleaning supplies are a huge help to Food Club members - items like these are difficult to afford when budgets are already stretched. G2 Revolution helps businesses develop unique recycling solutions, and partners with nonprofits to donate excess items to support local families. Donations like these help create an even more dignifying experience for our guests and provides access to much needed items. Thank you g2 Revolution!

In 2022, we partnered with Community Mental Health to expand our Outreach Team through the addition of a Recovery Coach. Today our Recovery Coach, Jess, plays a pivotal role in breaking down barriers and providing specialized support for neighbors seeking greater stability, while offering connection to critical mental health and recovery support resources. Every guest who works with Jess has a unique story. Earlier this year, one neighbor working with our team faced a series of hurdles that made maintaining sobriety a challenge. Meeting urgent needs like food, clothing, and showers through our Community Kitchen and the Refresh program First United Methodist Church, our team coordinated with Samaritas and Community Mental Health to pursue other support. Working together, our neighbor was able to secure a spot in a 90-day inpatient substance treatment program! He’s continuing his sobriety journey, and our team will keep providing encouragement and support. Everyone deserves a stable home and the peace of mind that comes with feeling safe. Homelessness can happen to anyone, often triggered by life events beyond our control—a medical bill, job loss, or personal crisis can swiftly unravel the fragile threads holding housing security together. As affordable housing becomes increasingly scarce, especially in communities like ours, the path back to stability is complex and overwhelming. Homelessness Awareness Month is a critical time to reflect on the challenges that put housing stability at risk, and to deepen our understanding of how we can help neighbors build healthier lives.
