Her focus as a Site Coordinator has been on addressing the needs of the immigrant and newcomer community. By integrating well-being with academic support, she strives to create a safe and nurturing environment where students can thrive. Today’s #MissionMonday spotlight is on Communities In Schools of Washington! Families in rural communities like Republic, WA, face many challenges, including limited access to medical care and transportation. Chronic absenteeism also affects 30% of students in the Republic School District. CIS of Washington is working hard to tackle these barriers head-on through monthly class competitions, birthday celebrations, and the “Girls Empowerment Club.” The team has also created an environment that connects families to the resources they need and encourages their participation in school-wide assemblies. Meet Andrea, a 12th-grade student at Manassas High School of Communities In Schools of Memphis. After being expelled, Andrea thought she would never graduate. But a life-changing connection with Student Support Specialist, Deontae Walker, changed it all. After experiencing a panic attack in class, triggered by stress from her home life, Deontae was the only one who could calm her down. His consistent presence and unwavering support helped Andrea navigate her emotional struggles and focus on her future. Andrea went from being chronically absent to not missing ANY days of school and is now on track to graduate on time! Her amazing turnaround is proof that Being Present Matters!
