a training program for parents and staff who support students using text-based multimodal communication

关于我们

Communication for Education provides a training program for parents and staff who support students using text-based multimodal communication in homeschool, community, or other educational settings. Our Mission Together, we aspire to empower individuals to choose and use alternative forms of communication to realize their educational and civic potential and to become meaningfully included in school and community settings. We believe communication is a basic human right. Communication for Education is a collaboration among the Autism and Communication Center at California Lutheran University, Reach Every Voice, and Autistically Inclined. Communication Partner training for individuals who work in educational settings is a “critical intervention component” in improving students’ AAC access and outcomes. Communication for Education, in collaboration with dozens of professionals and nonspeaking students, has developed a comprehensive, first-of-its-kind training program to help educators support students using text-based multimodal communication to access curriculum.

I'm thrilled to be a part of the Maryland State Department of Education's initiative to focus on communicative competency and work to make education more accessible and equitable for all learners, especially those who have communication access needs. Later this month, I'll be presenting for the Access, Equity, Progress (AEP) virtual webinar, Proficiency is Not a Prerequisite: Removing Roadblocks and Ensuring Access for Nonspeaking Learners. Although this session is targeted to Local Directors of Special Education and other nonpublic supervisory positions, it is open to interested outside parties as well. I hope some of my Maryland-based families and educators will consider joining or viewing the recording, which will eventually be posted on YouTube. This virtual session will be held on October 24, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The virtual meeting space will be opened at 12:45 p.m. and the session will begin promptly at 1:00 p.m. The purpose of this session is to provide a deep dive into what communicative competence is and how to provide a robust system of communication support for students with complex support needs, a continued initiative of the Division of Early Intervention and Special Education Services. We are proud and grateful to have hosted such an important event this week in partnership with the Autism and Communication Center at California Lutheran University. Participants from New York, Ohio, Oregon, Arizona, and all over California came together to build their skills supporting communication of nonspeaking and unreliably speaking individuals with the guidance of Lisa Quinn and Julie Sando. Participants got hands on experience working with multiple nonspeakers, learned from nonspeaking mentors, collaborated to create lessons and activities for young adults and little learners, and engaged in big conversations about best practices, ethics, and more. A special thank you to our nonspeaking mentors Trent, James, Bella, William, Samuel, and Diego for providing feedback and insights to help communication partners flourish. We appreciate the dedication of Dr. Edlyn Pena to make workshops like this accessible to more people. Thank you also to Reach Every Voice, LLC and Autistically Inclined for creating such a powerful training curriculum. Communication for Education is planning to bring this workshop to the East Coast in the near future, likely in Maryland.

“If I knew then what I know now, I would have concentrated my efforts to convince my parents to get me the hell out of there.” Trevor, a nonspeaking autistic person, is a long-time REV student and we've been fortunate to be along on their journey from the frustration of not being able to communicate effectively to being a prolific writer and advocate. Six year's after their first blog, Trevor revisits the ideas shared by a younger self and reflects. #autism #NonspeakingAutism #CommunicationAccess #Education
