    Several companies are getting rid of remote work and mandating employees come back to the office full time. I would assume that those companies have seen productivity declines as a result of remote work. It seems like most employees are not looking forward to returning full time to the office, yet employees are more productive. It seems a bit contradictory. You would think that employees would be more productive in the environment that they want to be in. Why do you think that employees are less productive at home? #psychology #remotework #homework

    I miss the stories. It was one of the best parts of being in home health. I have so many, but they are starting to fade. I had a patient who was friends with Eleanor Roosevelt Another patient had Vince Lombardi as their Teacher I had a former professional athlete after a knee replacement A patient who was a millionaire but lived like a pauper A patient that had Picasso's and Chagal's in their small apartment A home filled with mice and feces The most important quality for a healthcare provider in home care is the ability to communicate with patients. Patients need to feel comfortable and secure around you, you are in their home. That's when I started developing my method to help me better communicate and connect with patients.     Burnout is such a huge problem in healthcare! I've provided burnout workshops and education to many healthcare organizations. The key to my approach is helping healthcare workers gain insight into why they are burnt out, and then helping them develop a plan to address burnout based on what works for them.     If you've been following me for a while, you know that I post a lot about how healthcare providers can use psychology to better connect and motivate patients. My background as a Doctor of Physical Therapy and an Industrial/Organizational Psychologist give me some unique insights into this topic. Additionally, my past experience as a father of a terminally ill child navigating the healthcare system has also influenced my approach to this topic.     In this video we discuss 5 practical strategies to improve provider communication with patients. 1) Ask patients open-ended questions so they can discuss why they came to you and what they are hoping to achieve. 2) Validate patients when they express frustration or pain. You can simply say,"that sounds really difficult." 3) Make listening statements to show a patient you are paying attention to them. 4) Be supportive and verbalize it by telling patients you are there to support them if they need anything. 5) Ask patients for their thoughts on the proposed plan of care.     Today's Tuesday Tips animated video I sent out to the healthcare organizations I work with is about Unit Bias. Unit Bias describes an irrational tendency we have toward completing a unit. For example, would you act differently if a sandwich was whole vs cut into 2 pieces? According to Unit Bias, you are more likely to eat more if the sandwich is whole, because you would want to finish the unit. If the sandwich was cut into 2, you would be ok eating one half (completing the unit) and leaving the other half. The same is true with regard to motivating patients to adhere to their plan of care. If you said to a patient let's do 10 jumping jacks, that would have a lesser effect than if you said to a patient let's complete a jumping jacks program, and in order to do so you have to do 10 jumping jacks. The way you frame and phrase information goes a long way at motivating behavior change in patients. Unit Bias is just one example.     3 science based strategies to improve the patient experience! 1) Express empathy when interacting with patients. This involves mirroring a patient's facial gestures and body language to demonstrate to a patient that you're experiencing the same thing as them. Explore a patient's emotions by asking follow up questions and offer them support. Finish all your interactions with patients by letting them know that you are available to them if they need any support. 2) The Similar to Me Effect is a cognitive bias that describes an irrational tendency to feel more secure around others who are like us. When interacting with patient find commonality in order to create connection. Speak about common experiences like being a parent, vacations, pets, and sports. 3) Express confidence and humility when interacting with patients. When prescribing a plan of care discuss your rationale to patients and demonstrate your expertise with a sense of authority. Also, be humble by being open minded to patient suggestions and don't be to rigid if a patient can't conform exactly to your prescription.     I went to my dentist a while ago and after the visit their office texted me a list of oral hygiene tips. It was pretty dry, boring, and frankly, the type of information that had little impact on me and I'm sure others as well. I asked my dentist if I could give it a shot and create a branded animated video for their office teaching patients the same information in a more creative manner. I basically said, what do you have to lose? If you don't like it, then no problem. If you do, then great, and you can purchase the video for your office to educate patients on ideal oral hygiene. What happened? My dentist loved the video and continues to use it to educate their patients. Since then, I have been offering the same services to other healthcare providers. My background in healthcare, psychology, and education can help revitalize your current patient education tools.
