This isn't a parent-child relationship. This is a peer-to-peer relationship. If somewhere deep down you think that because you are "writing the checks" that then your service provider should somehow play a subservient role in the business relationship... You've got it backwards. Put a pile of cash on your doorstep and see if a marketing strategy (or any other service) magically shows up in an envelope the next day. You're missing a massive opportunity to get the absolute best out of your service provider if you think and act like you hold some power over them. It denigrates the relationship - not in ways you see - in ways only your service provider knows. Service providers: The money in the business exchange is not the prize. You are.

Thinking out loud here about productivity. If you’re still trying to “manage your time,” you’re doing it wrong. Here’s why… Not all hours are created equal. You can have two hours blocked off on your calendar, but if you’re mentally fried, those hours are useless. You’re staring at the screen, rewriting the same sentence, and somehow ending up doom scrolling for an hour instead. Time isn’t the real constraint. Energy is. ?? Some work takes deep cognitive energy (strategy, problem-solving, spreadsheets that make you question your life choices). ???? Some work needs creative energy (writing, designing, brainstorming - stuff that doesn’t show up on command). ?? Some work is just low-energy admin sludge (emails, Slack messages, scheduling things you don’t want to do). But if you try to do deep, creative work when your energy is tanked? You’re toast. So instead of obsessing over time management, manage your energy instead. ?? Do the hard-thinking work when your brain is fresh. ?? Save emails and admin for your lowest-energy hours. ?? Give yourself space for creativity to actually happen. Time is fixed. Energy isn’t. Figure out when yours is at its best, and work with it instead of against it. Next time you’re staring at your calendar wondering why you’re not getting more done, you’ll think of me. Manage energy, not time.

The latest issue of Harvard Business Review is all about How AI Can Transform Your Organization. For any leader, it is must read content. Key articles include: * Why People Resist Embracing AI by Julian De Freitas (Link in first comment) Reveals research on the key obstacles to AI adoption and gives advice on how to overcome them. This is important, because AI is a change management issue more than it's a technology challenge for most companies. * The Secret to Successful AI-Driven Process Redesign * How to Marry Process Management and AI This is a moment in time like I haven't seen since 1999. There are tectonic changes in the market today, and those who gather a "greater understanding" of how they are playing out will win the future. Readers are leaders! Note: HBR is the only magazine I throw in my bag for trips other than Waveform, the nerd-zine for modular synth lovers. #leadership #artificialintelligence #AI #innovation

A peek inside my tech stack - Part 2 Video. I don't use Loom. I use Tella. I find the editing easy to use and the ability to change layouts on the fly, the "zoom" feature, and the "camera framing" simple necessities now that I have them. I use Tella for shorter videos, async comms, and generally stuff you might think to use Loom for. But you could easily create long-form courses or something similar and be quite pleased with the results. I also use Descript. Tella actually has similar features to Descript now, but I find when I need a tightly edited, longer video - like cleaning up a webinar for on-demand access - Descript simply has no competition. The premise is simple. Make changes to the transcript of your video - recorded on Descript or uploaded - like you're editing a Word doc and the video adapts to those edits. You sort of have to see it to believe it. But to insert music or gifs or any type of media to your video, all you have to do is click on the transcript where you want it, hit insert, and you're good. The most next level thing about Descript is it's feature that allows to turn crappy audio into studio-quality audio in a click. It takes a minute for this to process, but it's well worth the wait. Of course, sometimes the video recording ends up coming through Zoom, but either of these products is a breeze to upload to. Not compensated in any way to say any of this. But when you finally find a product that works for you, you kinda wanna spread the word. #tella #descript #techstack #bestof2024
