Ten years ago, Academy-Award Winning Artist, Actor, and Author, COMMON, along with his mother, Dr. Mahalia Hines, decided they wanted to make a significant impact. More than just donating money, they wanted to have their hands in shaping our future leaders. What started in 2012, as taking 23 high school students on a five-day camping trip turned into a four-year high school mentoring program that has extended to college and beyond, now serving over 500 students. Together, they have built a family of mentors, instructors, parents, and volunteers that surround our youth with a village of love and support. Common Ground Foundation provides a holistic curriculum that encourages our youth to achieve academic excellence while inspiring them to realize their dreams & create an impact in the world. They come to us as dreamers but emerge as DREAMERS & BELIEVERS!

    Congratulations to the second cohort of IGNITE, which graduated this month. We are proud of the participating leadership teams from: City Year Chicago, COMMON GROUND FOUNDATION, INC., Equal Hope, Girls Inc. of Chicago, LINK Unlimited Scholars, Sunshine Enterprises, Inc., and The The Hope Center Foundation. Established with a significant five-year commitment from Golub Capital, IGNITE is the signature offering of the Golub Capital Social Impact Lab at the Rustandy Center for Social Sector Innovation at The University of Chicago Booth School of Business. The program, developed In partnership with Golub Capital and the Chicago Urban League, offers tailored resources to the leaders of nonprofits serving the Black community in Chicago to strengthen and scale the impact of their organizations. Applications for the third cohort of IGNITE will be open in the fall.

During my time at Howard, I was blessed with many amazing opportunities and connections that have shaped me into the woman I am today.     Introducing Bianca, the heart and soul of the Common Ground Foundation (CGF), and a beacon of inspiration and empowerment in the realm of women’s history. Bianca Thompson embarked on her journey with CGF in 2018 as a mentor, embodying the organization’s mission and vision with unwavering dedication. Her commitment was evident as she transitioned from part-time office assistant to full-time office administrator in 2020, and current role now as operations??manager. Bianca’s impact extends beyond administrative duties; she actively engages mentees in discussions about their post-secondary options, providing guidance and encouragement. Little did she know that while she thought she was motivating them, they were reciprocating the support. Inspired by their resilience and support, Bianca made the decision to return to college in 2019, a decision culminating in her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Southern New Hampshire University in 2021. On top of her accomplishments, The Common Ground Foundation is also dedicated to investing in Bianca’s personal and professional growth. Recently, Bianca was encouraged to participate in an impactful initiative called the Ignite Program, powered by the Chicago Urban League, to further her leadership capacity, fuel the foundation’s mission and contribute to Bianca’s impact and overall goals. Bianca’s journey exemplifies the essence of Women’s History Month, celebrating the resilience, dedication, and empowerment of women like her who are shaping the future.
