?? “I know that people say that this is just another administrative step and we don’t have time in the schedule, but it’s important that we make time to follow the proper procedures." Have you seen our latest #811BeforeYouDig influencer's important message? Our Education & Marketing Committee, led by Washington Gas's Rosemary Langowski and Georgia 811's Megan Estes, championed CGA's new influencer outreach program and tapped Underground Service Alert of Northern California & Nevada's Collin Miyadi to head up the task team. In the wise words of @highlightertiff on TikTok, "Not only can contacting 811 be a matter of life or death, but you face the risk of reputational and financial damages by skipping this very simple step.”
??♀? I was a late adopter of TikTok, and I still find it scarily "sticky." But seeing construction influencers like @highlightertiff reach our target audience with authentic content has been eye-opening. When videos about safe digging practices and #811beforeyoudig generate hundreds of thousands of views from people who actually work in construction – and spark real engagement – you see the potential for breakthrough impact without the cost burdens of mass-market strategies. We need fresh and effective approaches to reaching excavators where they are. Excited to keep exploring these new channels with partners who share our commitment to damage prevention. Creating meaningful change means trying unexpected platforms and strategies. Glad to be working alongside Lisa O'Leary on this outreach! #DamagePrevention #ConstructionSafety #EveryDigEveryTime

"One more second and he would've been dead." This is a must-read news item reported by NBC Boston highlighting the critical need for accurate utility maps in keeping communities safe and connected. Kudos to the state regulator (and CGA member), the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities, for its engagement on this issue.
?? Even when you do everything right, inaccurate utility maps can put lives at risk. A sobering story from NBC Boston highlights how a homeowner and her husband narrowly avoided tragedy after their properly planned excavation project encountered an unmarked electrical line. Despite following 811 Dig Safe protocols, outdated utility records failed to show critical underground infrastructure on their property. We commend the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities for their proactive oversight and commitment to strengthening damage prevention. Their emphasis on mandatory damage reporting and investigation of violations shows how regulators can drive positive change. But this incident underscores a crucial reality: We need better incentives for utilities to improve mapping accuracy and accessibility. Whether you're a professional excavator or a weekend DIYer, access to accurate utility location data isn't just about convenience—it's about survival.
