Shifting power to social justice movements.
关于我们
Common Counsel Foundation is a home and agitator for progressive community-oriented philanthropy anchored in grantmaking that is defined not only by who we fund, but also by the principles and practices that guide how we do our work. We are a more than 30 year-old national social justice organization, not defined or contained by geographic bounds. We advise families and individual donors, provide fiscal sponsorships and build operational capacity for movement organizations, and are home to multi-funder collaborative initiatives. Our team brings a wealth of sector expertise and lived experience to the justice issues we take on with our partners.

The tenant movement has won unprecedented advances in recent years at the federal, state, and local levels, and these victories helped catapult tenants’ rights and rent stabilization into the national debate. Kevin Simowitz shares in Nonprofit Quarterly that while funds like HouseUS and Fund for an Inclusive California have been supporting tenant organizing, a critical component to addressing housing affordability, we need philanthropy to do more. We honor the resilience, achievements, and lasting impact of Black Americans who have shaped our country. As we celebrate their stories and legacy, we also take this opportunity to celebrate the Black community leaders and members who are on the frontlines continuing the heart work and building a future where we all belong. This month is a reminder for all of us to be intentional with centering Black voices and resourcing Black-led solutions in our movement strategies. #BlackHistoryMonth #Philanthropy

It’s time to tell the truth about women of color and social justice. From the streets, to the ballot box, to elected office, no other demographic group stands up more consistently and unequivocally for human rights, democracy, and the planet. Yet when they are in leadership positions, women of color face persistent and unfair obstacles. For them, too often, the game is rigged. Vanessa Priya Daniel shares wisdom from 45+ women of color social justice leaders on how movements win, and what we can all do to make leadership positions less treacherous for them in her new book "Unrig the Game: What Women of Color Can Teach Everyone About Winning" (Random House Group).
