I am truly honored and humbled to be recognized as one of the “Outstanding Asian American Women Who Dared” award recipients. My heartfelt gratitude goes to Yue-Sai Kan, the China Institute, and everyone who made this event possible. Greatly appreciate my friend, Treasurer Fiona Ma for being my “specially requested” award presenter?? Looking back on my journey—from an international student at UCSF to the CEO of Chinese Hospital dedicated to serving underserved communities—I realize that every challenge has been a stepping stone to growth. My mother, a woman of immense strength and generosity, taught me that leadership is not about seeking personal accomplishment but about lifting others. She lived by the words of Fan Zhongyan: “Be concerned about the world’s troubles before others, and enjoy happiness only after others do.” That spirit of service has guided me every step of the way. As Asian American women, we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us, and it is our duty to pave the way for those who will follow. We must dare to break barriers, dare to lead with compassion, and dare to redefine what is possible. The world is full of uncertainties and challenges. To my fellow honorees and every woman in this room including my own daughter Melinda L. : May we always find opportunities in adversity and build windmills when the winds of change come, so together we can make the world a better place for all. Last week, we partnered with Homecrest Community Services Inc to host a Report for Support workshop at HCS Bensonhurst Center, educating 90 older adults on AAPI Hate, the importance of reporting incidents, and introducing the AAPI Hate Tracker for easy reporting and support through the NYC Anti-Hate Collaborative. Hearing their experiences reinforced why speaking up matters as we work toward a safer, more inclusive NYC.
