Founded in 1798 the Commissioned Corps is an elite team of more than 6,500 full-time, well-trained, highly qualified public health professionals. The mission of the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps is to protect, promote, and advance the health and safety of our Nation. The Commissioned Corps has full-time opportunities for highly skilled men and women who seek professional fulfillment, enjoy challenges, and want to improve the quality of public health for the Nation's communities that are most in need. For information about how you can make a difference through USPHS, call us at 800–279–1605. Officers serve in many health-related professions, including physician, dentist, nurse, pharmacist, dietitian, engineer, environmental health, psychological health, scientist, physical and occupational therapists, veterinarian, among others. Additionally, USPHS officers are detailed to military treatment facilities to treat service members returning from armed conflicts who may be affected by mental health issues. This unique partnership between DoD and the USPHS has expanded the number of mental health providers caring for military personnel affected by deployments, as well as veterans and families in need of mental health services and substance abuse treatment. Go to Disaster Assistance at DisasterAssistance.gov 2. Call the FEMA helpline at 1-800-621-3362 to apply for assistance. The #ThankYouHealthcareStamp pays tribute to healthcare workers for their continued dedication and contributions and to protect our health, safety and well-being. We are so proud of and grateful for our Public Health Service officers and their daily commitment improving health outcomes throughout our nation.   • Each category within the USPHS Commissioned Corps is represented by a Professional Advisory Committee (PAC). The Scientist PAC (SciPAC), formed in 1984, provides advice and consultation to the Office of the Surgeon General and to the Chief Scientist Officer on professional and personnel issues that impact Scientist Officers. In addition, the SciPAC functions in a resource and advisory capacity to Scientist Officers. CDR Colleen Scott, Chair, currently serves in the Coronaviruses and Other Respiratory Viruses Division as the Global Preparedness and Emerging Threats Senior Advisor. CDR Shayne Gallaway, Chair-Elect, is currently assigned to the Department of Defense, Defense Health Agency, Global Emerging Infections Surveillance Branch where he serves as the Respiratory Infections Focus Area Lead. CDR Zewditu Demissie, Immediate Past Chair, is the Deputy Associate Director for Science in CDC’s Division of Reproductive Health. CDR Alaine Knipes, Executive Secretary, is an epidemiologist with the President’s Malaria Initiative in CDC’s Division of Parasitic Diseases and Malaria. CDR Ruth Link-Gelles, Executive Liaison, serves in CDC’s Coronavirus and Other Respiratory Viruses Division as the Vaccine Effectiveness Program Lead. Today, SciPAC is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a service-wide celebratory event. They will commemorate this milestone with remarks from amazing officers who will reflect on the PAC’s mission, achievements, and future contributions. CDR Demissie will be providing remarks about SciPAC’s present era. CDR Scott will be speaking to SciPAC’s future. CDR Gallaway will be serving as the event’s Master of Ceremonies.   • The #USPHS Commissioned Corps team partnered with Remote Area Medical, alongside local community volunteers, last weekend and provided no-cost medical, dental, and vision care totaling over $140,000 to 204 patients during the 2-day pop-up clinic in Lusby, MD. 28 Public Health Service officers helped set up the clinics, provided direct patient care and supported clinic operations.

  • Today, we feature one of our extraordinary Scientist officers: CAPT Sara Newman. CAPT Newman earned her doctoral degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences focusing in epidemiology and social and behavioral sciences. Prior to this, she earned her Master in City Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. CAPT Newman has been assigned to the National Park Service (NPS) since 2007 and currently serves as the Director of the Office of Public Health (OPH) where she is the principal advisor to the Director and executive leadership of NPS for public health decisions affecting 300 million visitors to 409 parks nationwide. In this position, CAPT Newman also serves as Commanding Officer to all Public Health Service officers assigned to the Department of the Interior, providing support, guidance and management. As OPH Director, CAPT Newman is the NPS lead public health policy and management expert. Through her outstanding staff, she provides technical expertise to the NPS on food safety, drinking water safety, wastewater and communicable diseases, infectious disease surveillance, outbreak response, and health promotion. CAPT Newman and other esteemed senior Scientist officers will reflect on contributions of the Scientist Category and the Scientist Professional Advisory Committee during the SciPAC 40th Anniversary event on September 26, 2024. CAPT Newman is also featured in “Invisible Corps,” a one-hour PBS documentary covers the history and role of the PHS, the PHS Commissioned Corps, and how public health has evolved throughout our history. https://lnkd.in/eKSpCuKW.
