Safety Director Gary Matthews hosted a Safety Summit for all the Commercial companies to discuss changes in OSHA policy, updated EMWP (Elevated Mobile Work Platform) guidelines, as well as refreshing our team on potential issues moving into summer such as heat-related illnesses. We also welcomed an insurance representative to dive into the details of Experience Modification Rate, how it affects our job, and what job site safety procedures can best prevent accidents. #BuiltByCommercial #CUSafe

"Standard items like hard hats, safety vests and harnesses with next-generation, embedded NFC technology can turn each piece of equipment into a digital storage device. When scanned with smartphones or tablets, the PPE allows instant access to critical worker information, certifications and documentation. This simple yet powerful integration eliminates the need for workers to carry physical documentation while enabling site managers to quickly verify compliance and access emergency information with a simple scan. The technology integrates with existing safety management software systems, transforming time-consuming manual verification processes into effortless digital interactions that can be completed in seconds." https://lnkd.in/eNpdViQf

This #PiDay, we are celebrating our good friend—the circle! We owe circles a lot. From pipes to columns, conduits to cables, and footings to ducts, π plays a huge role in construction. It’s hard to build anything without it! We could go on forever about π but we are here to give thanks. So here’s to all the circles out there. I am sure we will see you around #EngineeringLife #ConstructionHumor

Do you know the Woman who built the Brooklyn Bridge? Emily Roebling was a trailblazing woman in engineering and construction, best known for her crucial role in completing the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. When her husband, Washington Roebling, became too ill to oversee the project, Emily stepped in—mastering engineering principles, managing workers, and ensuring the bridge's completion in 1883. Her leadership and determination shattered barriers in a male-dominated industry, proving that women could excel in engineering and construction. She later became an advocate for women’s education and equality, inspiring generations of female engineers. Emily was the first person to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, carrying a rooster as a symbol of victory. Today, her legacy stands as a testament to the power of perseverance, intelligence, and breaking boundaries. #WomensHistoryMonth #WomenInConstruction #WomenInEngineering

Commercial Construction was thrilled to attend the groundbreaking for our next project; the restoration of the historic Upton Mansion! The ceremony was hosted by AFRO Charities, welcoming Senator Chris Van Hollen and Mayor Brandon Scott to speak about the transformative impact that bringing this building back to life will have on the neighborhood. Upton Mansion will have offices for lease but also will house the entire newspaper archive of the Baltimore AFRO American, dating back to 1892!

Norma Merrick Sklarek was a pioneering architect whose legacy continues to inspire. A trailblazer in every sense, she became the first African American woman to be licensed as an architect in both New York and California. Her remarkable career is marked by iconic projects like the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, where her expertise contributed to the design of a diplomatic space on the world stage. At the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles, she helped shape a cutting-edge space that continues to define the city’s design landscape. And at Terminal 1 of Los Angeles International Airport, her work redefined the modern airport experience with elegance and efficiency. Sklarek’s work wasn’t just about the buildings—it was about creating spaces that uplift and inspire. #BlackHistory #BlackHistoryMonth #Construction

Elijah McCoy: The Real McCoy of Innovation Elijah McCoy was a brilliant Black inventor whose groundbreaking automatic lubrication system became integral for modern railroads, factories, and construction equipment. Before his invention, machinery had to be stopped and manually oiled, slowing progress. McCoy’s device kept engines running smoother, faster, and longer, revolutionizing industrial efficiency. His work was so effective that companies refused cheap imitations, demanding only "The Real McCoy"—a phrase still used today to mean the best of the best. With over 50 patents, McCoy’s innovations helped build the modern world. His legacy is a testament to the power of Black excellence in engineering and construction. #BlackHistory #TheRealMcCoy

Paul Revere Williams - "Architect to the Stars" Williams broke barriers as the first Black architect certified west of the Mississippi and the first Black member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Over his legendary career, he designed more than 2,500 buildings, shaping the skyline of Los Angeles and beyond. From crafting luxurious homes for Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball, and Cary Grant to designing landmarks like the Beverly Hills Hotel, Saks Fifth Avenue Beverly Hills, and the Theme Building at LAX, Williams mastered elegance and innovation. Despite facing discrimination, he perfected the skill of drawing plans upside down so hesitant clients could view his designs from across the table. His impact went beyond Hollywood—he also designed affordable housing, ensuring beauty and dignity in urban communities. In 2017, his groundbreaking work was honored with the AIA Gold Medal, making him the first Black architect to receive the award. Williams’ legacy proves that great design transcends barriers. #BlackHistoryMonth

Today, we honor the incredible legacy of Horace King – a true pioneer in the construction industry. Born into slavery in 1807, King became one of the most skilled bridge builders of the 19th century. His lattice truss designs revolutionized bridge construction, allowing for strong, durable structures across the South. King’s expertise was so respected that, despite racial barriers, he worked on major river crossings like the Chattahoochee and Apalachicola Rivers. After gaining his freedom in 1846, he built his own successful construction business, continuing to design bridges and public buildings. His legacy lives on through his family and infrastructure that still stands today. #ConstructionHistory #HoraceKing #BuildingLegacy #BlackHistoryMonth
