Our comic book, Chibok follows Hauwa and Fatima, two young girls whose lives are torn apart when they are kidnapped by a terrorist group. Though their story is fictional, the reality it mirrors is the tragic experience of hundreds of girls who were violently taken from their homes, their futures and lives threatened simply because they sought an education, empowerment and a voice of their own. On this International Women's Day, we stand for a world where education is a right, not a privilege, a world where no girls' future is ever at risk. This International Women’s Day, we shine a spotlight on some of our female colleagues at Comic Republic. Meet Eduvie, Eucharia, Praise, Nire and Elysia as they share what the day means to them. Growing up, I watched movies based on historical events in Western countries that made me root for their heroes. I experienced their pain, celebrated their joys, and adopted their values and enemies as my own. Now, with the tools and platforms at my disposal, I want to tell our stories—stories that resonate with our experiences, our pain, and our joy. The first time I heard about the innocent schoolgirls who were chasing their dreams of education, only to have their world torn apart the next morning as gunmen stormed in and ripped them from their homes and safety, the nightmare of the story of Chibok stuck in my mind. I still feel powerless, unable to do anything about the pain and horror the young women must have endured—wondering if, as part of a collective, a society, and a citizen, I have done my part to create a safe place for my fellow countrymen and women to simply live decent lives. As the CEO of Comic Republic, I have always believed in the power of storytelling to illuminate important issues. So, I told the abduction story the best way I knew how. I helped create and write a comic book series called?Chibok. #Chibok is more than just a story; it is a powerful narrative that captures the heart-wrenching abduction that shook Borno State and left an indelible mark on Nigerian history. At its core, this comic book tells the fictional story of Hauwa and Fatima, two brave souls through whose perspectives we experience the unimaginable horrors the abducted girls must have endured. Through?Chibok, I aim to shed light on the plight of these girls and honour their resilience. We have carefully told this story with reverence and the intention to highlight an issue that is yet to be resolved. This is not just a tale of sorrow, but a story of strength and courage—of those who faced unimaginable adversity. It highlights the insecurity in the Sahel region of Africa and how it affects Northern Nigeria, particularly. By bringing attention to these issues, we hope to inspire change and ensure that such tragedies become pointers to national weaknesses that need to be addressed—and that those we lost are never forgotten.
