?? Recently attended an incredible online event hosted by Lauren, and I’m still buzzing from the experience! ?? It was themed around product + engineering, held on the Gatheround platform—my first time using it, and I’m impressed! ?? Lauren curated activities like one-on-ones, small group discussions, group sharing, and even a photo booth! Here are some tips that made it effective: ??Have a 30-second elevator pitch ready. With only 5 minutes, every second counts! ???Ask questions at the right moments to keep the conversation flowing I connected with brilliant minds like Matheus Souza, Christof Jori, Keith A., Jr Oliveira ??????, Surajsingh Rajpurohit, Rahel Maharani, and Roofi Shaikh—all excelling in SaaS and engineering! If you’re not familiar with Lauren Gibson, her mission is to connect 100 people through innovative ways like this. She really transformed networking by grouping us by Role, Industry & Interests, making each interaction feel purposeful and engaging. Building team culture as a remote-first company is TOUGH. For most of immi’s growth, we’ve been remote and brought on teammates worldwide. This is amazing because get to work with incredible people with super diverse perspectives. We’ve had a strong writing culture from the beginning, so all information is readily available to anyone and is easily communicated across the organization. However, those water cooler chats about non-work topics were missed, especially as our team grew from 3 to 16 people. Most of the conversations became about work and we needed more balance. We’ve done 10+ things to help, here’s 3 of them: ??? DAILY WORDLE Every day, we would have a friendly competition on who would get the most points on Wordle for that week. We’d schedule our results for 4PM PST in our #wordle slack channel and see the results all at the same time. This was a fun way to keep our minds sharp and to make it a low-commitment way to connect with the team. ?? STARTER QUESTIONS Every 1:1 starts with a thought-provoking starter question so that we can learn more about each other in ways we normally can’t. Hands down, some of our best conversations start from these questions. We rotate through a list of 300 questions, here are five of them: 1. What's something you believe that most people don't? 2. What's the craziest thing you've ever done on a whim? 3. What's something you've learned about yourself since we last met? 4. Are there any innovative ideas or solutions you've been exploring? 5. What's something you're irrationally afraid of? ?? MONTHLY SOCIALS Every month, we aim to reserve a 1-hour block to go through a Gatheround bonding session or play games together as an entire team. Gatheround is similar to our starter questions but more interactive and in a group setting. The more you play, the deeper the questions get. It’s allowed our team to open up ??. For games, we had our Halloween Social yesterday and we played Among Us + Stumble Guys together as a team. Both were super easy to set up, free to play, and super fun! Don’t meet strangers online, networking online is a joke... This is what we’ve all heard from society, right? ?? Well, I have a different opinion about it! I recently attended an online networking event hosted by Lauren, and it was an amazing experience! ?? It was a Connection Power Hour with the theme product + engineering. Lauren organized it on the Gatheround platform. It was my first time using it, and I must say, it’s truly great! ?? There were various activities such as one-on-one sessions, small groups, group sharing, and even a photo booth! Here’s what I learned: ???? Have a good internet connection (I got disconnected twice ??) ???? Prepare a 30-second elevator pitch in advance—you’ve only got 5 minutes to impress! ???? "Narrow yourself down to a specific thing (niche)"—best advice from Christof ???? Be sure to ask questions at the right moments, as there are times when the conversation may fall silent. ?? People from over six time zones joined the event! ?? I met some amazing individuals like Matheus, Christof, Keith, Jr Oliveira ??????, and Manan, all excelling in the SaaS and engineering fields. Although I couldn’t meet Rahel and Roofi during the event, it’s been great connecting with them afterward! ?? So, should you attend such events? A big YES! But remember, networking works best when it's between equals. In my case, I had my LinkedIn services to pitch, and likewise, everyone had their own needs. For example, if you’re a startup owner, there’s no point in networking with a chef… unless you need delicious food! ?? Strive to make real, meaningful connections within your industry! We recently wrapped up our third of four Career Convos for the year, engaging our job seeking students with employers in the tech space for personalized, one-to-one networking conversations about working in tech. We had over 50 students connect with reps from 13 companies ?? It ended with a lighthearted closing discussion hosted on Gatheround – some of our grads who participated are pictured here ??
