This year during Delaware's #DoMore24 we come to you with heavy hearts—last week, Community Legal Aid Society, Inc. (CLASI) — one of the three agencies that CCJ funds support — received news that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development had abruptly cancelled their Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP) funding. This is a three-year grant with $425,000 allocated to CLASI annually to enforce the Fair Housing Act in Delaware, to ensure that our neighbors seeking housing are not discriminated against based on their race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, or family status. What does this work look like every day? Currently, CLASI has 80 open Fair Housing cases, the majority of which involve discrimination based on disability and requests for reasonable accommodations. CLASI recently had a client, a woman with physical disabilities requiring the use of an electric wheelchair for mobility, who was moved out of her accessible unit during renovations at her apartment complex. Unfortunately, the management company then did not move her back to an accessible unit, which left CLASI's client unable to reach the microwave, sink, or stove and unable to shower nor comfortably use the bathroom for months. The client was referred to CLASI after the management company denied her request to move units; she shared that "it no longer felt like home to me because all I could do was sit in a chair." After CLASI intervened, the management company finally agreed to move her to an accessible unit and install grab bars and an accessible shower and toilet in her bathroom. Her CLASI advocate shared: “The client had been very depressed. When she called to tell me that she was able to take a shower, she sounded like a completely different person from when we first met. It made me cry to hear her so happy.” This #DoMore24, we hope you will consider a contribution to the Combined Campaign for Justice to help us continue to fund the critical work of legal aid here in Delaware. A gift of $1900 covers the cost of one case and every contribution, no matter the size, makes a REAL difference. Together, we can ensure that legal aid continues to protect the rights and the dignity of those who need it most. https://lnkd.in/e5geSzBq
关于我们
Unlike in criminal cases, low-income and vulnerable people with civil legal problems are not entitled to court-appointed counsel, and must instead depend upon civil legal aid programs and pro bono representation. The Combined Campaign for Justice is a coordinated approach to fundraising to support Delaware's three nonprofit civil legal aid agencies.

The Combined Campaign for Justice (CCJ) is honored to announce our new partnership with the Foxwynd Foundation. The Foxwynd Foundation DAF funded the Foxwynd Foundation’s generous $150,000 donation to the 2024 Combined Campaign for Justice to launch a fall matching gift campaign in celebration of CCJ’s 25th?anniversary: 25Morein2024! Thanks to our partners at the Foxwynd Foundation, every NEW, RENEWED, or INCREASED donation made to CCJ before 11:59 p.m. on December 20, 2024, will now be matched up to $150,000. Donors can double their impact and help CCJ reach its 2024 fundraising goal of $2.0 million which will result in 25% more direct impact on the lives of legal aid clients. For 25 years, the CCJ has been raising critical funds for the three civil legal aid agencies in Delaware: Community Legal Aid Society, Inc. (CLASI), Delaware Volunteer Legal Services, Inc. (DVLS), and Legal Services Corporation of Delaware, Inc. (LSCD). These agencies work in partnership to provide free legal representation to as many vulnerable Delawareans in civil legal proceedings as possible. In 2023, these agencies handled nearly 8,000 cases serving 18,000 Delawareans: people who are poor, people with disabilities, older people, veterans, and survivors of domestic violence. According to Pamela Villagra, Executive Director of the Foxwynd Foundation, “The Bentley family is proud to?support the?Combined Campaign for Justice. Through this collaboration, we are helping expand access to crucial legal aid services for Delawareans in need. Together, we are committed to ensuring that the voices of vulnerable individuals—those facing domestic violence, poverty, and other hardships—are heard and represented.” “We are so grateful for the partnership and support from Foxwynd,” says CLASI Executive Director Dan Atkins,?“this gift will enable us to help even more people stay housed, fed, and free from domestic violence.?We hope this matching campaign will inspire more people to learn about and support the life-changing work we do.” Learn more and participate in CCJ’s 25Morein2024 campaign here:?https://lnkd.in/e_Yx3V37
