Today is World Hearing Day! ???? Every year on March 3rd, we come together to raise awareness about the importance of hearing health and the impact of hearing loss on individuals and communities. It's a day to remind ourselves of the significance of early intervention and the steps we can take to protect our hearing. Let's encourage others to get their hearing checked regularly and adopt healthy hearing practices. Whether it's turning down the volume, wearing ear protection in noisy environments, or seeking help from an audiologist like the ones at CSH, every action counts. Don't wait to get tested - take our quick and easy hearing test at www.ColumbusSpeech.org. Join us in spreading the word and advocating for hearing health on World Hearing Day! #WorldHearingDay #HearingHealth #Hearing #HearingLoss #HearingCareIsHealthcare #Audiology #HearingTest #Hear

February is Black History Month, which is a perfect time to celebrate culture, history, and learn about the contributions of many iconic Black individuals throughout history. Through stories and fun activities, we can create meaningful connections and foster?understanding, respect, and a love for diversity. Our speech department is celebrating the history and work of Alma Thomas, an artist and teacher who is best known for her abstract paintings. Here are some ways to incorporate learning and celebrate?her work during speech therapy:? ?? "Ablaze with Color" by Jeanne Harvey and "Alma's Art" by Roda Ahmed are two picture books that highlight Alma's life and her style of art. These stories are great for learning new vocabulary words (including words like "fascinated", "horizontal", "shimmered"), targeting listening and reading comprehension (ask your reader questions about details that happened in the story, ask them to predict what's going to happen next), and improving expressive language skills (encourage your child to share their thoughts and opinions about the story). ???Get creative and make an abstract painting of your own! Crafts allow the opportunity to practice using multiple language functions, including requesting ("I want red"), expressing opinions ("I like your sun") and protesting ("I don't want to use markers"). Crafts also can be used to target problem solving, including deciding what materials to use, what to do if the paint is taking a long time to dry, etc. Lastly, target sequencing skills by talking about the multiple steps needed to complete your creation using words including "first", "next", and "last."? #BlackHistoryMonth #SpeechTherapy

Columbus Speech & Hearing will host a special storytelling event February 2 in partnership with the Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council for their series: “My Life. My Story.” Five DeafBlind individuals were carefully selected by CSH to represent the wide spectrum of deafblindness in Ohio. These individuals will prepare their stories during a workshop before the public event. Their stories will convey the need for and benefits of deafblind services. ? Please join us for this FREE, public event on Sunday, February 2 from 1-3p at the Columbus Museum of Art to support these storytellers. The event will be interpreted in American Sign Language. Sundays are also free admission days at the Columbus Museum of Art. We are thrilled to partner with Columbus Museum of Art to highlight our friends and neighbors in the DeafBlind community. ? If you need special accommodations to join us for the Feb. 2 event, please register:?bit.ly/3E5zWjX ? Columbus Speech & Hearing has recently expanded its relationship with the DeafBlind community with funding from the?Ohio General Assembly allocated in the 2024-2025 Biennial Budget. As a non-profit with 101 years of history in Central Ohio, we are known widely for our audiology services, speech therapy, and ASL classes. Columbus Speech & Hearing is now serving more than 30 DeafBlind individuals with a statewide pilot program. The Support Service Provider or Co-Navigator program is fully funded through June 2025. We are engaging with the state legislature to continue financial support. This is a much needed program for DeafBlind Ohioans. ? We hope that these stories will touch all Ohioans, improving DeafBlind awareness and advocacy.
