关于我们

Columbus Museum of Art’s mission is to create great experiences with great art for everyone. Whether we are presenting an exhibition, designing an art-making activity, or giving visitors directions, we are guided by a vision to connect people and art. CMA nurtures that connection and removes barriers between our community and our collection. CMA’s galleries are filled with works that manifest creativity. Our collection includes outstanding late nineteenth and early twentieth-century American and European modern works of art. We house the world’s largest collections of works by beloved local artists Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson, Elijah Pierce, and George Bellows; and acclaimed collections such as The Photo League and the Philip and Suzanne Schiller Collection of American Social Commentary Art. A commitment to contemporary art, folk art, glass, and photography continues the Museum’s dedication to showcasing art of our time. CMA is where creativity and the daily life of our community intersect and thrive, as we champion new and different ways of thinking and doing. We celebrate the creative process and provide opportunities for people to cultivate and discover the value of creativity in their own lives.

Pause for a closer look at this Clarence Holbrook Carter painting, on view in Gallery 2. Born #OnThisDay in Portsmouth, Ohio, Carter often drew inspiration from his surroundings. Here, two rural women walk beside a railroad track after a train has passed. They are gathering “clunkers”—pieces of coal that have been thrown from the train—to use in their own homes. Does this scene feel grounded in reality—or something beyond? Clarence Holbrook Carter, Jane Reed and Dora Hunt, 1941. Oil on canvas. Museum Purchase, Derby Fund.

Louise Nevelson (1899–1988) revolutionized modern sculpture with her bold, monochromatic wood assemblages. Born in Ukraine and raised in Maine, she moved to New York, where she studied with Hans Hofmann and worked alongside Diego Rivera before pioneering her signature sculptural style in the 1940s. A trailblazer in the male-dominated art world, Nevelson’s singular vision and relentless dedication made her one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century. On view at CMA through August 24, "Louise Nevelson: Dawn to Dusk" offers a rare and expansive look at her career. The exhibition also highlights Nevelson’s little-known connection to Columbus. In 1961, she formed a lasting bond with the Glimcher family, founders of Pace Gallery, who helped elevate her work to international prominence. Through Pace/Columbus (1965–1982), she exhibited in the city, and the Glimchers later gifted several significant works to CMA—two of which are featured in the exhibition. Learn more about Louise Nevelson at our next Wednesdays@2 on March 26. https://ow.ly/gNl450VjVaF #Women’sHistoryMonth Louise Nevelson, 1975. Photo by Richard Avedon ? The Richard Avedon Foundation.
