关于我们

Columbus Museum of Art’s mission is to create great experiences with great art for everyone. Whether we are presenting an exhibition, designing an art-making activity, or giving visitors directions, we are guided by a vision to connect people and art. CMA nurtures that connection and removes barriers between our community and our collection. CMA’s galleries are filled with works that manifest creativity. Our collection includes outstanding late nineteenth and early twentieth-century American and European modern works of art. We house the world’s largest collections of works by beloved local artists Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson, Elijah Pierce, and George Bellows; and acclaimed collections such as The Photo League and the Philip and Suzanne Schiller Collection of American Social Commentary Art. A commitment to contemporary art, folk art, glass, and photography continues the Museum’s dedication to showcasing art of our time. CMA is where creativity and the daily life of our community intersect and thrive, as we champion new and different ways of thinking and doing. We celebrate the creative process and provide opportunities for people to cultivate and discover the value of creativity in their own lives.

  • Elijah Pierce brought stories to life through intricate wood carvings, capturing moments of faith, everyday life, and the world around him. Pierce was #BornThisDay in 1892. Though he didn’t consider himself an artist, his more than one thousand carved and painted sculptures are now celebrated as masterworks of American folk art. A licensed minister by calling and a barber by trade, Pierce opened his own shop in 1954 on East Long Street—just two blocks from the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts, now the Columbus Museum of Art. After his passing, CMA acquired more than two hundred works and memorabilia from his estate. See Pierce’s work on view now in Gallery 4, CATS, and the Wonder Room. • This Black History Month, we’re spotlighting four artists on view from CMA’s permanent collection who explore what is included and what is left out of the historical record. As an African American lesbian artist working in the 1970s, Lula Mae Blocton pushed beyond racial and gendered binaries. Her painting, “Summer Ease,” is inspired by sunny days in New York City and joyous memories of coming out. The work radiates a soft, warm glow in its bright, multicolored rectangular shapes, overlapping like woven textiles. It is one of the artist’s many grid paintings from the 1970s, which explores color gradations and the movement of light as metaphors for a more inclusive spectrum in society. Lula Mae Blocton, Summer Ease, 1975. Oil on canvas. Museum Purchase, Derby Fund.
