Today marks the 45th anniversary of the Refugee Act of 1980, a landmark law that reshaped the U.S. refugee resettlement process. Since its signing by President Jimmy Carter, the United States has welcomed over 3 million refugees, providing safety, opportunity, and a fresh start. In Central Ohio, refugees are not just rebuilding their lives—they are strengthening our communities. Each year, Year 3 students in our Global Scholars Diploma program take their learning beyond the classroom with a Take Action Project—a student-led initiative designed to create real impact in the community. On March 15, you can see one in action at the Project See the Good Market, led by a student committed to connecting Ohioans with businesses doing good in the community. On this 25th anniversary of International Mother Language Day, we celebrate the rich tapestry of linguistic diversity that shapes our world and our community. Languages are not only vital for education and sustainable development but also serve as the vessels through which cultures thrive and knowledge is passed down. In Columbus, Ohio, over 100 languages are spoken by students in central Ohio schools, and approximately 18.4% of residents speak a language other than English at home, reflecting our city's vibrant multicultural fabric. This diversity enriches our society, broadening our collective horizons. Multilingual education, especially for minority and indigenous languages, bridges the gap between learning and cultural identity, paving the way for more equitable and cohesive societies.
