Columbia University's Foremost Pre-Professional Government Society

关于我们

Pi Lambda Sigma [POLIS] is Columbia's foremost pre-professional society for students pursuing government and policy careers. Since our society's founding at Cornell University in 2016, POLIS has managed to equip fellows with the skills needed to land positions at some of the nation's most prestigious think-tanks, consultancies, and government agencies. Our fellows cultivate essential skills through learning how to build and maintain an effective network, resume, cover letter, and interview preparation for policy-centered jobs, and application process tips & tricks in diverse government fields.

I am super excited to share that this summer, I will be working with one of the organizations that had the most impact on my life - Junior State of America (JSA). I will return to JSA as a Residential Assistant at the Stern Civics Immersion Program at Stanford University. In this position, I will cultivate an engaging and memorable summer experience through event planning and designing experiences, act as a teacher's assistant in the program's classes, and mentor the students who participate in the program. I'm so grateful for this opportunity and so excited for this experience!

I am excited to share that I was selected as a Laidlaw Scholar at Columbia University! The Laidlaw Foundation Undergraduate Research and Leadership Scholarship Program selects up to 25 students to pursue a research project and community engagement initiative over two consecutive summers. Under the guidance of Professor Amelia Frank-Vitale, this summer, I will be interviewing Spanish-speaking newly-arrived migrants, and social services workers across New York City, as well as conducting a sociological and linguistic literary review. My focus will be on Venezuelan, Colombian, and Ecuadorian migrant populations' experience with language as a barrier and as a resource for inclusion in navigating bureaucratic and cultural areas at the local and national level. I am eager for the next two years, and excited to share their stories to the larger NYC community. #LaidlawScholars2024 I want to thank everyone who supported me throughout this process, especially Professor Frank-Vitale, Celine Aenlle-Rocha and my writing center instructor Candice Kail!

NYC is so much more than a financial center. There's culture, founders, and a student population that's hungry to make a difference. Unfortunately, it's difficult to gather more than a handful of brilliant people outside of workplaces, college campuses, and chance encounters. I want to bring cool people together in New York. Starting in April, me and the brilliant Jessica Ye will be hosting regular meetups with the city's most interesting folks. Could be founders, CEOs, artists, whatever. If you're doing something that might inspire someone, I want you there. If this resonates with you, drop your information in the form or contact me at @josephjojoe_ on Twitter. Please share, engage, or refer others - and make some magic happen. Let's foster some genuine builder culture on the East Coast.

As VP Programming for Columbia Pi Lambda Sigma [POLIS] and a Business Team Member for Columbia Undergraduate Law Review, I had the opportunity to coordinate and moderate a “Careers in Law Panel” today with distinguished individuals in the legal profession. It was a privilege to learn such valuable insight from our panelists!
