???? Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons welcomed 139 students on August 9th. Students come from 32 states and 60 different undergraduate institutions. 4% of the incoming class were the first generation in their family to attend college. VP&S Dean Katrina Armstrong, MD, addressed the students and emphasized the importance of humanism in medicine during a time of widespread discord and conflict: “You are joining this profession at an extraordinary time, but that opportunity can too often be undermined by social division, dysfunction, and anger that’s around us."

Columbia University announced today a new $400 million gift from Roy and Diana Vagelos, which will secure Columbia’s leadership in biomedical science research and education and produce a vast array of compelling opportunities for improving society’s health and wellbeing. The gift is the single largest ever made to Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons’ medical school and, taken together with their previous giving, establishes Roy and Diana as the most generous donors in the history of Columbia University. Two Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons scientists are among 26 leading researchers named as new investigators of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). Samuel Sternberg, PhD, and Dmitriy Aronov, PhD, now join five other VP&S faculty members as HHMI investigators and will receive approximately $11 million over a seven-year term -- which may be extended indefinitely pending scientific review.
