Thank you to the The National Institutes of Health and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver?National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) for their support in our effort to atlas and map the structure-function material properties of the human uterus. We use these fundamental data to feed digital twins of pregnancy to understand how the uterus stretches and grows in pregnancy. Such computer simulations will aid in derisking new biomedical devices to support pregnancy and maternal health.

The Mechanical Engineering Department at Columbia University School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) welcomes applications for a faculty position at the rank of Lecturer in Discipline or Senior Lecturer in Discipline, to start July 1, 2025. This is a full-time, non-tenure-track, renewable appointment with multi-year renewal contingent on successful reviews. Lecturers in Discipline are officers in the University who meet a programmatic need for instruction in specialized fields. Responsibilities of this position will include teaching three lecture courses per semester on topics in computational mechanical and aerospace engineering design and analysis. In addition to or in lieu of teaching some of these courses, the lecturer will also be responsible for mentoring and advising undergraduate student clubs and students in a new aerospace minor and MS specialization. The lecturer will also be expected to help with curricular development and outreach activities, some involving high school students. The school is especially interested in candidates who will contribute, through their teaching and service, to the excellence and diversity of the academic community. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Columbia University welcomes applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor (without tenure, but on tenure-track) rank in the field of robotics and autonomous systems. Areas of emphasis include, but are not limited to, learning and control systems, particularly the intersection of analytical and data-driven modeling, innovative mechanism design, smart materials, and future autonomous systems. Robotics systems of interest range from humanoids and legged robots to drones and vehicles, as well as general automation, locomotion, and manipulation across various application areas. This past weekend, Columbia Engineering celebrated Family Days as part of Homecoming. It was wonderful to see alumni, students, and their families coming together for many special events and programs. On Friday, I stopped by the first fundraiser for Columbia University's Formula Racing Club and got a first-hand look at their student-built race car. I also attended the downlink session with NASA astronaut Don Pettit from the International Space Station. This special event was hosted by Professor Michael Massimino and our student group the Columbia Space Initiative. I continue to be amazed by the incredible things our students do! Thank you to all our Columbia University families for being our guests this weekend.?

We are making fundamental digital biomechanical models of the uterus and cervix to design devices to keep the cervix closed to prevent preterm birth, to understand how the uterus goes back to shape after birth, to measure how much the uterus stretches during pregnancy, to visualize cervical remodeling, to provide the world with accurate anatomy and tissue elasticity for any biomedical device for the uterus and cervix. Using fairly simple AI, a sophomore student in my group was able to shatter a long-held belief in forensics, that different fingers of the same person have unmatchable fingerprints.
