关于我们
Computer Science at Columbia University Part of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the Department of Computer Science advances the role of computing in our lives through research and educates the next generation of computer scientists with its academic programs. Academics The department is dedicated to making computer science accessible to students of all backgrounds. For majors, the department offers everything from introductory computer science and programming classes to advanced instruction in 11 research areas, with opportunities for undergrads to work on advanced research projects. For non-majors, the department presents a broad range of interdisciplinary offerings. Most graduates of the undergraduate computer science program at Columbia either step directly into career positions in computer science across industry and the public sector, where they are in high demand, or continue their education in graduate degree programs. For those wanting to deepen and expand their computer science skills, the MS program provides advanced education in several computer science tracks while offering opportunities to participate in state-of-the-art research. Those pursuing PhD studies will work alongside world-class researchers to develop new techniques, cutting-edge systems, and innovative algorithms as they tackle challenging problems with critical impacts across science, technology, and society. Research Areas Founded in 1979, the department houses more than 60 faculty, who are thought leaders across all computer science fields. With 11 research groups whose activities span the theory and practice of intelligent, efficient, sustainable, and secure information systems, the department is dedicated to excellence in research while including active undergraduate and graduate participation.

In a world fixated on ever-higher resolutions and increasingly detailed images, a revolutionary new camera takes a daring step in the opposite direction. The Minimalist Camera is an innovation designed to prioritize efficiency and privacy over unnecessary detail. By capturing only the minimal data needed for a specific task, this groundbreaking technology challenges conventional thinking about imaging—and redefines what cameras don’t need to do.
Imagine a camera ?? that captures measurements while protecting your privacy. That’s what Computer Science PhD student Jeremy Klotz is working on, and is today’s #ThesisThursday! As a part of Professor Shree Nayar’s CAVE lab, Jeremy developed the minimalist camera that uses just a handful of freeform pixels that can take on arbitrary shapes. Since the camera does not capture an image, it preserves privacy and is completely powered by the light falling on it. This allows for practical applications - like monitoring traffic or crowd control - without compromising privacy or even needing a tether or battery for power. Jeremy was recently recognized for his innovation, earning the Best Paper Award at the European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV 2024). Learn more about Jeremy: https://lnkd.in/embYw6cS

Dear CS@CU Community, How many of you have taken a technical interview before? Assuming majority of you have, the next question is, how many of you felt prepared for said technical interview? The hiring process for an open position can often span several weeks, involving multiple rounds of interviews. When interviewing for a technical job (i.e., software developer/engineer, project manager, data scientist, etc), you should expect at least one of these rounds to be a technical or coding interview. The technical interview is the employer’s chance to put your hard, analytical skills to the test and get a feel for how you solve problems. With practice and preparation it’s a hurdle that you can all overcome. Please take advantage of our Technical Interview Resource recommendations below that can be found on our CS Careers page, which includes online coding practice tools, reading recommendations, and resources categorized by topic.
