Columbia Technology Ventures is the technology transfer office for Columbia University and a central location for many of the technology development initiatives, entrepreneurial activities, external industry collaborations, and commercially-oriented multidisciplinary technology innovations across the university. CTV’s core mission is to facilitate the transfer of inventions from academic research labs to the market for the benefit of society on a local, national, and global basis. Each year, CTV manages more than 350 invention disclosures, 100 license deals, and 20+ new IP-backed start-ups, involving over 750 inventors across Columbia's campuses. CTV currently has over 1200 patent assets available for licensing, across research fields such as bio, IT, clean tech, devices, big data, nanotechnology, materials science, and more. Columbia Technology Ventures has a particular focus on start-up companies. Over the years, CTV has been involved with launching over 200 companies based on Columbia's technologies. What began as a collaboration between Tau Motors and Electrical Engineering Associate Professor Matthias Preindl, has grown into a new endeavor--the Columbia Center of Advanced Electrification. Congratulations to Foss Toilets on its working prototype! Dr. Ruby Lai is commercializing a water-recycling flushing toilet with zero liquid discharge developed with Dr. Kartik Chandran from Columbia's department of Earth & Environmental Engineering.
Two years ago, I started Foss Toilets to build a water-recycling toilet system. I’m proud to share with you that a working product prototype is here. This toilet system lets you “go” anywhere. It just needs to be plugged into a regular household electrical outlet, without requiring any water or sewer connection. It has a perfectly lovely and ordinary flushing experience, without draining clean drinking water each time you flush.
