In the EU–South Africa Summit taking place in Cape Town this Thursday, March 13, the European Commission is launching talks with South Africa on the first-ever Clean Trade and Investment Partnership (CTIP). What do we know about CTIPs, and how can they foster sustainable investment governance? In a new CCSI blog, my co-authors Carl Frederick Luthin and Stefan Mayr and I argue that the investment pillar of CTIPs should go beyond political promises and contain binding and tangible commitments from the EU to support partner countries in phasing out fossil fuels, fostering sustainable investments, and ensuring just transitions. Importantly, CTIPs should be combined with the termination of investment treaties with ISDS. ?? There is widespread recognition that climate risks are intensifying. However, persistent confusion and conflation among these risks often undermine effective responses.
