Happy Pi Day!
Happy Pi Day! Pi is a never-ending mathematical constant that many NASA and JPL engineers and scientists use when making calculations… but how many digits do they really need? An engineer explains the answer: go.nasa.gov/3Dm57aJ

40 years since Atlantis (*ahem* our teams favorite shuttle) was introduced to the world. Atlantis played a pivotal role in shaping today's space economy. As a reusable spacecraft, Atlantis demonstrated the feasibility of reusing space vehicles, a concept that has become fundamental in modern commercial spaceflight operations. This approach has significantly reduced costs and increased the frequency of missions, enabling private companies to participate actively in space exploration and commercialization. "Over the course of its 33 missions spanning more than 26 years, Atlantis flew virtually every type of mission envisioned for the space shuttle, including government and commercial satellite deployments, deploying spacecraft to visit interplanetary destinations, supporting scientific missions, launching and servicing scientific observatories such as the Hubble Space Telescope, performing crew rotations and resupplying the Mir space station, and assembling and maintaining the International Space Station." The retirement of Atlantis and the shuttle program in 2011 led to a temporary decline in space-related employment, particularly in Florida's Space Coast region. However, this transition paved the way for a revitalized space economy, with private companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin emerging to fill the gap, leading to economic growth and innovation in the aerospace sector. https://lnkd.in/ewFKdF7A
“In everyone’s pocket right now is a computer far more powerful than the one we flew on Voyager. I don’t mean your cell phone — I mean the key fob that unlocks your car.” —?Rich Terrile, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory scientist and member of the Voyager imaging team, quoted in Jim Bell’s book “The Interstellar Age” It’s incredible to think about how far technology has come. The technology developed for missions like Voyager continues to inspire advancements here on Earth. That’s why organizations like The Planetary Society are so important—they bridge the gap between space science and its real-world impact. Learn more about the history of computing in space in the link below.
Ambitious space missions in recent years have showcased both the challenges and triumphs of the new space industry. It’s exciting to see innovative engineering approaches push the boundaries of what’s possible. At Colossus, we believe space engineering can learn a lot from terrestrial engineering—especially when it comes to computing.? Even with the best planning, failure is always a possibility—but so is success. The key isn’t perfection; it’s resilience. Radiation will corrupt data, hardware will degrade, and systems will fail. What if we started designing for failure?

?? Celebrating One Year of Flight Heritage! ?? Yesterday, our team at Colossus marked a major milestone—the 1-year anniversary of our Kestrel GPU’s flight heritage! ?? In March 2024, we sent our GPUs into low-Earth orbit aboard Loft Orbital's YAM-6 mission, which launched on SpaceX’s Transporter-10 rideshare flight. Since then, Kestrel has been proving its capabilities in space, enabling high-performance edge computing where it's needed most. A huge thank you to our incredible team, partners, and customers who made this possible. Here’s to pushing the boundaries of in-orbit computing and many more years of innovation ahead! #SpaceTech #AIinSpace #FlightHeritage #KestrelGPU #Innovation #Teamwork #EdgeComputing #NewSpace

Jason Cerundolo and I will be at the Satellite 2025 Conference in just a few short weeks! We're excited to reconnect with industry leaders, partners, and new faces in DC. If you'll be there, let’s set up a time to meet, whether for a chat, a meeting, or even a meal. Looking forward to seeing you all soon!
Sharing to amplify a time-sensitive opportunity to secure flight heritage for our latest GPU Platform. If you're interested in partnering, reach out to our Head of Sales - Andre Alger.
Colossus is poised to flight-qualify our Falcon GPU Platform, engineered to deliver over 248 TOPS of AI performance for small satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). With the launch provider, bus provider, and contract vehicle secured, we’re ready to move forward for an October 2025 launch. The only missing piece is a government sponsor to pledge support. All we need is an initial email commitment to lock it in; formal paperwork and next steps can follow seamlessly. This is a time-sensitive opportunity, and we’d love to discuss how it could align with your mission priorities. Contact my email at:[email protected] to learn more and explore potential collaboration.
