For many of us, bulbs are just a small piece of the gardening calendar. Minds have turned away from the spring to focus on caring for the summer garden. But for the growers, bulbs are the whole calendar. Across the Atlantic, growers are still hard at work cultivating the bulbs that will be planted this fall. In the Netherlands right now, bulbs are being dug up. In July, growers will finish digging and begin grading by size. Finally, they will be dried, cured, and readied for shipment to the U.S. in August and September before making their way to your doorstep. First Tulip Day in NYC’s Union Square celebrated with 200,000 tulips given to New Yorkers to mark 400 years of Dutch New York history. The Dutch arrived in what is now New York in 1624 to establish New Amsterdam. This event is the work of Royal Anthos, an organization that represents Dutch companies that trade in flower bulbs, and the Consulate General of the Netherlands.
