Celebrating the legacy of composer Gustav Mahler through an annual festival featuring all of Mahler’s musical output.
关于我们
Founded in 1987, Colorado MahlerFest celebrates the life, music, and times of the great composer Gustav Mahler during a week-long festival, culminating in an orchestral performance of one of Mahler’s major symphonic works. Thirty-two years ago, performances of Gustav Mahler’s symphonies were the exception rather than the rule. Audiences had opportunities to hear the popular First and Fourth Symphonies, but performances of his larger works were infrequently heard. This inspired Founding Artistic Director Robert Olson to create a festival dedicated to the performance and study of the entire repertoire and life of Mahler. In 2015, Kenneth Woods was appointed MahlerFest’s second Artistic Director. The MahlerFest orchestra’s 100-plus musicians come together from across the United States and other countries for a week of intense music-making where aspirational musicians have a chance to work side-by-side with inspirational mentors. Drawn by their passion for Mahler’s music, they create the Colorado MahlerFest Orchestra, and perform what are widely considered the greatest (and most difficult) symphonic creations in the repertoire. Colorado MahlerFest’s continuing contributions to promoting the understanding and knowledge of Mahler’s music have resulted in significant international recognition. In 2005, the International Gustav Mahler Society of Vienna awarded Colorado MahlerFest its rarely bestowed Mahler Gold Medal. MahlerFest was honored alongside the New York Philharmonic, joining such past recipients as the Vienna Philharmonic and Leonard Bernstein.

Two more videos from MahlerFest 37! David LeRoy Biller played with our Electric Liederland band and has a very successful performing and recording career. “He’s played or toured with Ray Price, Jimmie Vaughan, James Burton, Billy Gibbons, Buddy Miller, Dave Alvin, David Grissom, Leon Rhodes & Buddy Emmons… and has contributed to hundreds of albums ranging in styles from heavy metal to blues, jazz, country, western swing, rockabilly, gypsy jazz and beyond.” Since he was coming to the festival, we asked him to write something for the brass quintet concert. The result is this world premiere performance of his "Little Piece for Brass Quintet." https://lnkd.in/dW2g77tt Emmy-nominated composer Anthony Barfield’s "Gravity" is based on Langston Hughes’s poem, “Dreams Deferred,” and was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic. https://lnkd.in/d97mjEfD May 16, 2024 Canyon Theater at the Boulder Public Library From MahlerFest 37, May 15-19, 2024 Daniel Kelly & Richard Adams, trumpets Lydia Van Dreel, horn Lucas Borges, trombone Jesse Orth, tuba Support the music you love! Mahler & Strauss were mirrors that reflected each other & rivals who encouraged one another. They went out of their way to champion each other’s works. When Mahler died in 1911, Strauss began working in earnest on An Alpine Symphony. This work became his memorial to Mahler. youtu.be/T7EVoXOS4x0

It's taken a good ten days to start to recover from the annual back-to-back insanity of Colorado MahlerFest and Elgar Festival. At least it's a happy kind of exhausted. Here's lovely review/wrap-up/essay on MahlerFest from the cultural historian Joe Horowitz. https://lnkd.in/eZzXDyc9
