CNS excels in interdisciplinary research in the life, environmental, computational, and physical sciences that touches lives—reducing energy costs, transforming medicine and health care, sustaining our natural resources, creating new materials, and improving the food we eat and the world we live in. This fall, the Northeast has been grappling with an alarming surge in droughts and wildfires. These have been fueled in part by record-breaking heat, low rainfall, and climate-driven shifts in weather patterns. This spring, we spoke with Thomas from Beverly, MA. He is a junior majoring in Natural Resources Conservation, a program within the Department of Environmental Conservation. Thomas grew up outdoors, venturing on regular camping and hiking excursions with his dad. So, when Thomas started thinking about college, he wanted to go somewhere where he would be able to continue that passion. “I’m really glad I chose the University of Massachusetts, because of the community I’ve found as a member of the College of Natural Sciences [CNS],” Thomas reflected. “One of my favorite classes that I’ve taken has been Tree Felling with Brian Kane,” said Thomas. “I actually took it as an extra class because I had heard so many good things about the professor. This class was so hands-on, and we got to learn so much about the topic.” As a leader of the UMass Outing Club—now serving as president, as well as a whitewater rafting, canoe, and hiking leader—Thomas has been able to grow his connection to the outdoors and share his appreciation with other students. This club was a driving force in his decision to switch from the College of Engineering to CNS. "I’m really glad I switched into CNS,” Thomas expressed. “It has made my experience at UMass very enjoyable.” After he graduates, Thomas is hoping to attend the police academy and eventually become a fish and game warden. On a new episode of NPR’s Science Friday, guest host Kathleen Davis spoke with Distinguished Professor D. Julian McClements of the College of Natural Sciences at UMass Amherst’s Department of Food Science to better understand how UMass is innovating on plant-based meat. Plant-based meats often have a uniform texture by design, but researchers—including those at CNS—are working to reintroduce the imperfect, fatty texture that makes animal meat unique: "We have a few different ways that we're trying to do [marbling],” says McClements. “One way is to use 3D printing, so we...create these edible inks...of adipose tissue. And we'll use the 3D printer to print...the fat-rich regions and the protein-rich regions, so it looks something like real meat." In Massachusetts, 2023 saw at least 3,886 vehicle collisions with deer, marking the highest number since 2002. This has been driven by the rising deer population, according to MassDOT data. But it’s not just deer. GBH recently spoke with Scott Jackson, an extension professor in the Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at UMass Amherst, to learn more about collisions with other common MA animals, such as red foxes, bobcats, turtles, salamanders, and porcupines. “When you think about impacts on ecosystems…it’s hard to think of something that has more of an impact than the road," said Jackson. Julie Brigham-Grette, a professor at UMass Amherst Earth, Geographic, and Climate Sciences and a newly selected co-lead of the Climate Expert Group for the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program, worked in collaboration with tribal leaders to push for what is now a new requirement for the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the Arctic. The NSF will now mandate that researchers obtain written approval from any impacted federally recognized American Indian or Alaska Native Tribal Nation before receiving funding. Brigham-Grette explains it this way to Science Magazine: "Suppose someone came up to you and said, ‘Look, I want to camp in your backyard. And, oh, can I borrow your car?’ You’d want to know what’s going on, and maybe even how you might help.
