Tales from the Sewer in Oklahoma: Wastewater monitoring of infectious diseases Dr. Katrin Gaardbo Kuhn Presidential Professor, Department Vice Chair Biostatistics & Epidemiology Hudson College of Public Health, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Wastewater-based epidemiology has emerged as a powerful tool for monitoring infectious diseases at the community level. In this seminar, we explore how sewage surveillance provides early warnings of infectious disease outbreaks, tracks disease prevalence, and informs public health responses. We will discuss the scientific methods behind wastewater testing, the details of large-scale implementation, and its potential for shaping future disease surveillance, control, and prevention strategies. The talk will highlight key findings from the successful wastewater monitoring program in Oklahoma, covering pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2, influenza, and gastrointestinal bacteria, with emphasis on how the program has helped direct public health action across the State.
