  • ?? What’s next for forestry? Dean Tom DeLuca recently shared five key insights on the future of the industry with global architecture, engineering and construction firm HDR. From advancing Mass Timber adoption in the U.S. to utilizing advanced technology and robotics that improve harvest efficiency and allow for the traceability of timber, research led by the College of Forestry is helping architects, engineers and construction firms identify new approaches to using wood — the only renewable structural building material — in the built environment. • Hoopa Valley Tribal member and aspiring Burn Boss Glenn Jones, a grad student in the FERM Department, is helping to reconstruct historical and cultural fire regimes on the Central Oregon Coast Range. Blending Indigenous knowledge and Western science, the project aims to revive traditional burning practices, support ecosystems, and sustain cultural resources. “This research is not only meaningful to me personally, it's impactful to our next seven generations as we face an uncertain future with climate change and contemporary wildfires,” Jones shares. The Huang Collaborative Innovation Complex building project on OSU's Corvallis campus aims to showcase groundbreaking sustainable construction techniques. To meet the rigorous vibration standards required of the sensitive equipment that will be housed in the new complex, ZGF Architects collaborated with the College of Forestry and TallWood Design Institute to design the building's structural bay with mass timber columns, beams and a composite deck that provide the stability needed for sensitive scientific equipment, while also reducing embodied carbon emissions by 108% compared to conventional all-concrete construction. A portion of the timber that will be used in the complex was hand-selected from the Pleco Harvest in the McDonald-Dunn Research Forest. Locally milled by Freres Wood, the wood will store carbon in the built environment for the building’s lifetime. This closed-loop process highlights how ecological forestry can drive sustainable, renewable and carbon-conscious construction here in Oregon and around the world. • COF Associate Dean for Inclusive Excellence and Maybelle Clark Macdonald Director of Tribal Initiatives in Natural Resources Eisenberg Cristina, PhD was recently featured on an episode of the??????????????????????podcast! Dr. Eisenberg joined host Matthew Kristoff to dive into the concept of "Two-Eyed Seeing" - a powerful approach that blends Indigenous ecological wisdom with Western science for holistic forest stewardship. "Reciprocity means that the forest is here to take care of us, but we have a huge responsibility to take care of the forest," shares Dr. Eisenberg. "And that means we take what we need, and we give back more to the forest." Listen here:?https://beav.es/GGv #nativeamericanheritagemonth #traditionalecologicalknowledge

  • This summer, forestry students in field school embarked on hands-on learning excursions, exploring the many facets of forestry! One highlight was a trip to Suttle Lake and nearby forested areas, where they surveyed the landscape, studied fire management, and explored diverse topographical and ecological features. When they weren’t out in the field, the class enjoyed fishing, hiking, and hanging out—making the most of the perfect setting for aspiring forestry professionals. “Field school helped me?connect not only with my other forestry students?but also with the clubs and organizations offered through the COF,” says forestry management student Magnus Capellen. "Being a transfer student, field school helped me make friends and connect with other students."
