Help keep the Peninsula of Charleston Safe for Students, Visitors, and Residents! Our College of Charleston EMS student volunteer program has a profound and direct impact on our entire 10,000-student campus community and beyond. Servicing the peninsula of Charleston, South of Line Street, CofC EMS first responders provide mutual aid to Charleston County EMS, reducing response times and providing a critical resource to our unique melting pot community of college students, tourists and long-time residents. Our CofC EMS student volunteers respond to hundreds of calls per year, many of which result in transportation to Roper St. Francis Hospital or MUSC. CofC EMS has a long track record of success and service on the peninsula of Charleston. It was established by students in 1995! I did not truly appreciate what our CofC EMS students do until I participated in a ride-along – pics below! After all of the ambulance/etc pre-checks and a supply run, we were immediately called to a fall accident at the local jail. I saw our CofC EMS students take control of the situation and provide excellent care to an individual who was being detained. Along with a policeman escort, we provided transportation to the hospital. Start-to-finish the entire call was executed with precision and professionalism. While I hung back and observed the entire event unfold (like a deer in the headlights!), I felt so very proud of our CofC EMS students. But we need your help. Our ambulance is 20 years old with 260,000 miles and suffers from intermittent mechanical and electrical problems. Today is CofC Day #CofCDay – a 24 hour day of giving to celebrate the College of Charleston’s birthday. Our goal is to raise enough money to purchase a new ambulance.
