University of Virginia College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences researchers have taken a groundbreaking approach to investigating war crimes through environmental science. The report by associate professor sociology Fiona Greenland and the CURIA Lab, funded by the U.S. State Department's Conflict Observatory, examines the destruction of Ukraine's Oskil Dam in 2022. Using remote sensing, they confirmed significant environmental damage impacting water resources in one of Ukraine's driest regions. While the report doesn't attribute blame, it underscores the severe environmental consequences of the ongoing conflict.
