Helping motivated students from under-resourced backgrounds achieve their college dreams!
关于我们
A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to assist academically-talented, high-achieving students from economically-challenged and disadvantaged backgrounds seek opportunities in higher education. Each year, we select Scholars, and guide them through the challenging college choice process. Among other support, we interview and counsel Scholars and parents to identify a list of potential colleges and universities that provide financial and mentoring assistance for the admission process, and facilitate campus visits to help them reach their full potential. We have learned that it costs a minimum of $2,000 to support each Scholar. Once enrolled in a college or university, we counsel Scholars as needed during their academic career. Our future goal is to also provide monetary assistance for expenses not covered by their financial aid package such as books, a laptop, transportation, travel abroad, emergency situations and other needs deemed necessary and appropriate as determined by the Executive Committee.

College Choice Foundation was excited to participate in the FAFL FINE ARTL FINE LIFE COMMUNITY TEEN SUMMIT last Saturday which highlighted vendors and educational resources available to support our youth in the Birmingham area. Mental Health is a growing concern, particularly in socioeconomically challenged areas, which heightens stress, anxiety, depression and negatively impacts academic performance in our youth. This event aims to shed light on the importance of engaging and educating our city about the resources available to assist. College Choice Foundation supports this effort. Thank you Glynda Boyd for being our awesome SAC, student advocate consultant and being part of this event for CCF!

Congratulations to our Berea Carter G. Woodson Legacy Scholars! This award recognizes African-American high school juniors who have demonstrated outstanding character, academic achievement and leadership as exemplified in the life of Dr. Woodson and the legacy of Berea College. Abigail received the Dr. Samuel Hurst Award named after a 1st Gen Berea grad who invented touch screen technology. Also for outstanding character, academic achievement and leadership! So exciting!

College Choice Foundation took 35 Scholars on a 4-day college road trip to tour 8 colleges/universities! These schools reflected awesome contrasts - big, small, urban, rural, research, liberal arts, HBCU, and PWI, and more! Vanderbilt, TN State, Fisk, Notre Dame, Adrian College, Case Western Reserve, Kenyon and Denison. These trips are so fun but also imperative for discernment and to help our Scholars find their best fit! Seeing schools in person is so transformative! One student commented after this trip: “College visits are amazing! They literally provide you with information about that institution before you enroll. When you visit a college, you can see things that are not available to you online. It’s extremely crucial that you get to see college life real and unedited. When I go on college visits, that’s what I go to see the actual school in all its unaltered beauty.”

Full circle. Michelle, our first College Choice Foundation Scholar, graduated this past weekend with a Masters of Arts; Applied Behavioral Analysis and Clinical Science, from Rollins College. Her family is dear to me, her father, Harold, one of my most treasured friends. I am beyond grateful Michelle and her family trusted us 10 years ago to help her navigate the college admissions process. She attended Washington University in St. Louis debt free, now has her Masters and has plans to pursue her PhD!

These three blazed a trail to Sewanee four years ago as our FIRST College Choice Foundation Scholars to attend Sewanee! Aaliyah (pre-med), Jeremiah (molecular biology) and Deven (pre-engineering): They had never heard of Sewanee, AND it was COVID. So while they did visit, there were no tours of buildings or class attendances, no tasting the food, or exploring the dorms. They took a leap of faith! And they have had an amazing experience and excelled! None of them wanted to leave, and the boys refused to even pack up to send stuff home with their moms! Aaliyah graduated in 3.5 years and came back to walk. I’m beyond grateful to these three for taking a chance on Sewanee, trusting me when I promised Sewanee would look out for them and making the most of their time at Sewanee! They have inspired many others from CCF to follow their path.

Let's Lasso Up Some Fun under the Stars at College Choice Foundation's 9th Annual Wild West Roundup! https://lnkd.in/dCF3pfPu. Purchase tickets today and plan to join us for a RIP-ROARING good time on Sunday, June 2, so we can raise the funding to help deserving students with low socioeconomic status attend the college of their dreams and graduate ready to change the world! Delicious food provide by Urban Cookhouse, savory brews by Good People Brewing Company, rockin music by The Onlys and refreshing beverages by Coca-Cola Bottling Company UNITED, Inc. We are currently serving 200 Scholars and have 20 alumni (college graduates). Our outcomes are excellent. 91% of Scholars graduated college within 6 years (average, 4 years). Impressive results, especially when compared to national data showing only 28% of students from high poverty and low-income schools graduate within six years.
