Are you visiting family and friends in different locations and states over the summer? See if there is a local university or college to check out! At the beginning of their college admissions process, students might not know what they are looking for in a school; seeing and experiencing any college is a great way to start to understand what they like and don’t like. In a city? Book a visit or walk around at a local university to see if they like the idea of going to college in a city (even if it is not that particular city). Near a large state school? Spend the day wandering around the campus to rule in or out attending that type of school. Near a rural campus? Drive through and around the campus to see if your child likes being in a quieter environment. Most students feel they need to have a list of schools they want to apply to before visiting schools. Creating a college list is an important step in the college application process. Here are our tips for building a college list that is "just right" for your teen. 1 - WHERE WOULD THEY THRIVE? Consider programs, location, size, cost, campus culture, facilities, grad rates, faculty, career services, reputation. 2 - RESEARCH! RESEARCH! RESEARCH! Look at college websites & social media, attend virtual events, talk to students and alumni, take a tour. Tip: Set up a “college only” email and join as many mailing lists as possible! 3 - THROW OUT COLLEGE RANKINGS College rankings mean absolutely nothing when it comes to how happy or successful a student will be at a particular college. 4 - THROW OUT THE WORD “SAFETY”! Don’t choose a school because it is "safe"; choose a school where your teen will thrive. We prefer the term “likely school”. A school where they are likely to be accepted AND that they like! 5 - ENSURE THE LIST IS BALANCED Ensure the list is balanced! Every school on the list should be somewhere your teen would be happy. Here’s our guideline: ? Likely Schools ? Target Schools ? Reach Schools 6 - STAY ORGANIZED Create a spreadsheet of schools you and your teen have researched. Include campus visit details, application requirements, cost, etc. Creating a college list can be overwhelming, but you don't have to do it alone.
