From supporting staff and stabilizing culture to cultivating relationships and strengthening internal processes, the period between executives can be fertile ground for an organization and provide a leg up to an incoming leader. Thanks to my Interim Executive Solutions, LLC colleagues Jamie Bearse for writing this piece and David C. Harris for sharing it!

Shanelle Matthews issues a compelling call to action for social justice activists that centers the power of voice and narrative.
"Fascism offers a clear, emotionally compelling narrative – a return to "law and order," a scapegoat for every crisis, a vision of power and domination. The Left, in contrast, often struggles to articulate a bold, unified alternative, falling into reactive, defensive, or utopian messaging that fails to connect with the daily struggles of working-class people. We cannot afford to remain on the defensive. Too often, we face a false choice between pragmatism and radicalism, between incremental wins and transformative demands. We must reject this binary. Our task is not to water down our vision but to make it irresistible."

In founding CollectivePromise, my goal was to help organizations navigate major transitions such as leadership shifts and staff unionization. My new interim CEO role at Please Touch Museum hits squarely in that sweet spot - supporting the Museum and its dedicated team as the?search for its next CEO continues, and ensuring faithful first-year implementation of the Museum's new collective bargaining agreement with its staff union. I'm honored to serve and excited for the work ahead! https://lnkd.in/erZcY7-a

“For us to be of any use in a Trump world, we have to pay grave attention to our inner states, so we don’t perpetuate the autocrat’s goals of fear, isolation, exhaustion or constant disorientation.” With thanks to Waging Nonviolence for this grounding piece. https://lnkd.in/dqiq6BRJ

I led a progressive organization through the last Trump Administration. I remember walking to work the day after that election, trying to find words, feeling like I needed to give meaning or hope or direction to others, all while feeling more than a little broken inside myself. If you are a leader in a progressive space trying to take care of yourself and your team today, and you want an ear or a sounding board, please reach out - no fee or business agenda - just peer to peer love and support. ??

Sharing a resource for mission-driven leaders as we head into an intense election week(s).
What should nonprofit leaders do to prepare for election uncertainty? Some organizations have spent months mapping scenarios, while others are just starting to plan. But regardless of where your nonprofit stands, there are concrete steps you can take now. We spoke with nonprofit leaders about their plans for implementing flexible work policies, creating safe spaces for staff dialogue (without assuming shared views), and staying focused on their missions through uncertainty and election anxiety. We also look at how organizations are connecting with peers and planning their communications for what promises to be a tense post-election period. Sara Herschander reports: https://bit.ly/40DMl7A How is your organization preparing for election week? We'd love to hear from you. Share your thoughts in the comments below.

During our session today on housing as a social determinant of health, it became abundantly clear that a core need is to address and protect the health and wellbeing of folks doing this work - especially Black women. Let’s talk together about ways to support progressive leaders!
real-world experience and calm counsel to help mission-driven organizations leverage transformative opportunities
Day 2 of Reinvestment Fund’s Community of Practice on Housing in the Southeast was so rich. * Kickoff Keynote by Leah Rothstein about ways we can combat government-sanctioned racial segregation in housing. * Breakout on housing as a social determinant of health. * Discussion about HBCUs as enduring anchor institutions. * Session on intervention effectiveness. * Closing underscoring the need for both public and private buy-in, and the role philanthropy can play in having the long view. Leaving Jacksonville proud of RF’s impact and grateful for wonderful new colleagues and opportunities for engagement and collaboration.

I just returned from hiking the Via Degli Dei – a 130 km trek from Bologna to Florence across the Apennines. This is my third thru-hike, and the one with the most relentless, steep, rocky climbs and descents. I’d conquer an extended intense section only to look up and see there was more coming. I found at those times that it was important to keep my mind firmly committed to my end goal – arriving safe, happy, and hungry in Florence. And also, that it was critical not to stare wearily up the hill with its uncertain end point, but to set my focus on the footing I needed to move effectively from one step to the next. I aim to apply this thinking to my work at CollectivePromise, and to help mission-driven organizations push past feeling panicked or overwhelmed so they can face new and daunting challenges the same way -- with an eye toward the end goal, and a focus on the clear, manageable, immediate steps needed to get there. Reach out if I can be of service!
