The UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health announced that seven faculty members were to be the recipients of the second Gillings Research Excellence Awards. Each recipient was awarded $500 to support their research, scholarship and professional development. "The purpose of the chair-nominated Gillings Research Excellence Awards is to recognize one early- to mid-career faculty member from each department who has demonstrated excellence, innovation and impact in their research pursuits." AI has almost endless possibilities, but we know that it functions?so much better with a human touch. That's where #HITL comes into play. Human-in-the-loop (HITL) processes refer to the integration of human expertise, intuition, and decision-making into various stages of an automated system or artificial intelligence (AI) development, validation, and deployment. These processes aim to strike a balance between the efficiency and scalability of AI and the contextual understanding, empathy, and ethical considerations provided by human input. While not a panacea, human-in-the-loop processes are an important tool for avoiding unintended consequences. The incorporation of human judgment in #AI-driven #healthcare systems is particularly important: each patient’s situation is unique, and ethical considerations are often at the forefront.
