"We prioritize healing" they say. But how often do those words match the practice?
I've watched organizations and teams toss "rest" around casually for years, without any real strategy to make rest a core tenet of team culture. While we may think proclaiming this value without an action plan is better than nothing, there are real and damaging consequences to this habit:
? Vacation time piles up because you don't feel able to use it
? Rest becomes about driving more work, not our humanity
? Time "off" is full of anxiety b/c you're afraid of the chaos you'll return to
? Projects stall b/c there are no processes for continuity when you need a break
? Daily reality is so draining that vacations don't restore you
This is too common, but it doesn't have to be YOUR reality. I work with people of all job types who are ready to make rest a real component of their lives, their profession, and their organizations.
Rest isn't a concept - it's a value and a practice. But for rest to truly be about the wellbeing of our teams, and not just a means for more productivity, it has to be intentional, prioritized, nuanced, and operationalized. Moving from the idea stage to the practice stage can feel hard to do alone, so we are rolling out this series to help. Each Wednesday we're going to explore different rest concepts, how these do and don't show up in our organizational spaces, and translate theory to practice through strategy and resource-sharing.
We can't wait to continue building communities committed to liberated, effective, and care-driven teams!
