Non-for-profit advancing fashion by confronting injustices harming us all.

关于我们

Fashion is a way of expression. We all wear clothes and say something to the world in what we choose to clothe ourselves in. It’s time our choices reflect what we really want for our world. For too long, conversations around improving fashion have been tunnel-visioned by looking at only one pillar of justice, be it environmental, humanitarian, or anti-speciesist. Our mission is to combat all three key injustices together. The most effective way to fight injustice in the fashion industry is by primarily addressing animal fashion supply chains. By illuminating the issues within these systems, we can work to uproot all three key fashion injustices; against humans, non-humans, and the planet.

We all deserve a fashion future where the story of how what we wear is made, is one we are proud to tell. No destruction and exploitation ? Only protection, regeneration, creativity, craft, community and innovation. Listen to the latest episode of 'Fashion, Really?' Where Emma Hakansson and Joshua Katcher talk about the latest sustainable and ethical fashion news, and mention the film, SHIRINGA: Fashion Regenerating Amazonia, which Emma directed. ??? https://lnkd.in/eWBeni4k Watch SHIRINGA here: https://lnkd.in/eru5KDyi

  • Just 70% of French brand members of Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode have a public emissions reduction target. Ahead of Paris Fashion Week, we are calling for this to change. Home to the Paris Agreement, the French fashion industry has a responsibility to ensure its production aligns with a liveable future. Transparency and accountability is essential to positive progress, so these targets also need to be public. The best ways to reduce emissions? Shift beyond animal-derived and fossil fuel based materials, slow down production in line with planetary boundaries, and decarbonise the fashion supply chain's energy sources. • Knowing the benefits of shifting beyond animal-derived materials is one thing. But how do you actually introduce next-gen, animal-free materials to consumers effectively? That's exactly what our new resource for the fashion industry, made in collaboration with FOUR PAWS, explores. We know that there are legislative, climate, biodiversity and animal protection benefits to shifting beyond animal-derived materials. We know that citizen consumers are increasingly asking brands to protect animals and choose responsible materials free from their exploitation and slaughter. It is time for fashion brands to publicly commit to phase out periods for animal-derived materials. We invite brands to explore our transition guide, which looks at Napapijri's move beyond fur followed by down, GANNI's move past virgin animal-derived leather, and Chloé's phase out of wild animal skins. And if you're feeling bold, tag a brand you think needs to take a look! Explore the guide and our other resources: https://lnkd.in/eGRyrKcb Join our newsletter: https://lnkd.in/d3euDtRQ

  • If you are a fashion educator, we want to hear from you. Alongside IE New York College and with the support of Swinburne University of Technology we are developing the Responsible Fashion Education Index. Inspired by the value of Fashion Revolution's Fashion Transparency Index (tracking how brands report on their impact), we plan to increase transparency regarding how fashion education institutions incorporate teachings about fashion's impact on people, animals and the planet into their fashion design courses. Students deserve to know which schools will best ready them for the future of the fashion industry: one which prioritises continued life over endless profit. Our founder Emma Hakansson and expert on responsible fashion education, Michelle Gabriel are leading this work. Our data review is ongoing, but will be complimented by the insights of fashion educators. We understand that sometimes, a course outline may have minimal sustainability and ethics education, but those teaching the course make a conscious effort to incorporate these teachings themselves. We hope this questionnaire will make these efforts clear in our Index, when curriculum outlines themselves show less relevant education. Please share it widely! https://lnkd.in/gXhgsVFT

Not a word of English is spoken throughout the nearly 12-minute short film that is “Shiringa,” the first in a series of mini-documentaries by an Australian nonprofit that eschews the narrower concepts of “fair fashion” or “vegan fashion” for a system it calls “total ethics fashion.” It’s a story that derives, after all, not from New York, London or the other fashion capitals of the world, but from the Awajún people of the Amazon rainforest, a?biomaterials?firm in Lima and a fashion designer in?Peru. Together, they’ve been quietly using the latex of the shiringa tree to create an animal-free?leather?alternative that is naturally warm, supple and waterproof. For generations, the Awajún people have been mixing the latex with native Peruvian cotton fibers, coloring it with natural dyes like annatto (from the seeds of the achiote tree) and huito (a fleshy fruit) and then drying it on large wooden frames to produce textiles for clothing.?The process is as low-impact as it gets, powered by elbow grease and the heat of the afternoon sun. But the Awajún territories, like the rest of the Amazon, are being increasingly encroached upon by?deforestation. The No. 1 reason for this is cattle ranching to satisfy the global demand for Brazilian beef and generate the leather that is a?valuable byproduct?for the luxury goods sector. “Not everyone shows the care for the Earth that we do,” said Rosalia Manuic Taan, one of the Indiginous women feature in the film. “Across Amazonia, land is destroyed…the jungle is burned. The lives of the animals are not respected. They are abused while people lose our homes. We will not allow these cutting trees here.” https://lnkd.in/egwBfhEb

  • SHIRINGA: Fashion Regenerating Amazonia is now streaming on WaterBear Network! Our short film follows the Awajún people of the Peruvian Amazon who work with caxacoristudio to create a bio-leather that supports their community, defends against deforestation, and offers the fashion industry a much needed alternative to the harmful animal-derived leather and plastic materials currently being used. Directed and produced by our founder Emma Hakansson and featuring designer Mozhdeh Matin, we invite you to watch, be inspired, and then learn more about this material on our website: https://lnkd.in/gCuZbZjn

  • Collective Fashion Justice produced new learning resources about methane emissions, now included in this Carbon Literacy Training for Fashion and Retail. We were very glad to work with Safia Minney, MBE FRSA and Fashion Declares to include this, as methane is far more potent than carbon in the short-term, but also shorter lived in the atmosphere. This means curbing methane emissions is a highly effective way to reduce global temperatures quickly. Animal-derived materials from ruminant species, the degrading of textiles in landfills, and methane from oil extraction for synthetics are all serious issues to move beyond. We encourage fashion industry members to take this training!
