We’ve been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) DOE Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations to build up to 175 microgrids for #rural #communityhealthcenters in the US southeast. Together with our CHARGE Partners: Capital Link, National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC), and Clean Energy Group, and many other critical and community benefits partners like American Microgrid Solutions, Black Owners of Solar Services, Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC), and GRID Alternatives , we will be able to build resilience, and provide carbon reduction and financial savings for rural and remote health centers who are vulnerable to power loss and climate-caused natural disasters. The goal will be for health centers to better serve their communities while we also help train critical clean energy workforce in the region. Ours was one of 17 community-driven projects in rural and remote areas across the country selected to receive funding to build and upgrade clean energy infrastructure. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/d8ri8Vtz I'm so proud of the Collective Energy Company team for the effort it took to make this dream a reality.

So happy to be part of this first award listed and to see it come together after many many months of working and planning!
This week, OCED announced awards for three projects in nine states, committing up to $700 million of federal funding. ??? ?The National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) plans to install solar, battery storage, and microgrid controller systems at approximately 125 community health centers in the Southeast. The project would provide backup power to these health centers to help ensure continuity of care during emergencies by providing reliable power necessary for critical medical equipment such as the refrigeration of insulin and vaccines.?? ? Century Aluminum plans to build the first new primary aluminum smelter in the nation in 45 years. When completed, the smelter would double the size of the current U.S. primary aluminum industry while avoiding an estimated 75% of emissions from a traditional smelter due to its state-of-the-art, energy-efficient design.? ?In New York, the Skyven Technologies project team plans to pioneer a process that would electrify steam production to replace natural gas boilers. Skyven aims to demonstrate this process at multiple energy intensive manufacturing facilities that currently rely on fossil fuel.?? ? ?? What a year and what a great way to end 2024-with another completed #healthcenter #cleanenergy project at La Clínica de La Raza in Oakland, CA. In 2024, Collective Energy Company: 1. More than doubled our number of clean and resilient power projects for health centers and critical facilities across the country, resulting in: --10 mW of solar and battery storage --3,680 tons of CO2 avoided, or the equivalent of 150,000 trees planted, annually --benefits to dozens of communities and close to 1M people served, 65% of whom live in Justice40 communities 2. Were a part of ANOTHER Dept of Energy award of over $100M over 5yrs to bring resilient power to community health centers in Puerto Rico. https://lnkd.in/eTmveGki 3. We're highlighted in 4 HHS/OCCHE Case Studies https://lnkd.in/gPW7hZ3y 4. Received critical charitable and investment support from multiple entities including: Invest in Our Future, Wells Fargo, The Kresge Foundation, The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, The Schmidt Family Foundation, BQuest Foundation, Ulupono Initiative. 5. Created a testimonial video sharing the perspectives of health center leaders in 8 states about why they chose to pursue a clean and resilient energy project with us. https://lnkd.in/ehbAVxMv 6. Were one of only 33 prize winners from the Dept of Energy's "Energizing Rural and Remote Communities" prize https://lnkd.in/epvNzJxh for our work with Chiricahua Community Health Centers, Inc. in Willcox, AZ and with Capital Fund to develop a new clean energy lending program for health centers that's flexible and easy to navigate. 7. We are so incredibly grateful for the support of Invest in Our Future and their group of funders. You all recognized the importance of bringing the just clean energy transition into communities that would otherwise be left out. On behalf of those communities, thank you for your leadership.
Community health centers make up the nation’s largest primary healthcare system, serving nearly 32 million people, most of whom are low-income. The 16,000 sites spread across every state and territory are natural fits for community resilience hubs. But it’s estimated that less than a third of them have backup power systems. ? Not only is this a missed opportunity, it creates huge risk. Power outages can cost community health centers up to $300,000 a day while jeopardizing the well-bring of their patients. ? In 2022, the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC), Capital Link (an affiliate of Community Health Center Capital Fund) and Collective Energy Company joined together to address this. Their collaboration, the CHARGE Partnership, helps community health centers install solar + storage systems that will not only cut back on energy bills, but keep them operational through emergencies. ? Two years in, CHARGE now has a pipeline of over 200 potential projects, and they’re receiving roughly three new inquiries a week. Each new inquiry kicks off a conversation focused on the health center’s needs and goals. From there, CHARGE develops a turnkey proposal, detailing installation costs and laying out rebates, loans, and grants available through the IRA. And they lean on Capital Link’s expertise to help health centers navigate financing options. ? Thanks in part to IOF’s grant, CHARGE has the resources to take health centers right to the point of project construction, all without having to charge them a cent. ? They’re also using the grant to support an expansion into parts the country that have low power costs—and thus offer lower financial upside for a solar+storage system—yet high vulnerability to extreme weather, like Texas and Arizona. Already, they’re making encouraging progress. In fact, last week, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) published a case study on a 312-panel solar array that CHARGE helped bring online at a health center in Douglas, Arizona—a city that struggles with power outages, having suffered more than 10 in the first half of this year alone. ? As Andrew MacCalla, Co-Founder and CEO of Collective Energy, observed, “We shouldn’t live in a world where a lack of power causes loss of life. We have the technology to solve this.” ?
