??We're honored to announce that The Reading League has published a Curriculum Navigation Report on Collaborative Literacy (2021), our comprehensive core ELA curriculum that is comprised of the Being a Reader and Being a Writer programs. This informational report—the only third-party review of Collaborative Literacy (2021) to date—examines how the program aligns with the science of reading. The report appears exclusively on the Curriculum Decision Makers page of The Reading League Compass website, which provides stakeholders with direction when making decisions related to the science of reading. As a mission-driven organization, Collaborative Classroom thanks The Reading League for this opportunity to refine our work and advance our shared goal of bringing evidence-aligned literacy instruction to all. ??Access all Curriculum Navigation Reports published by The Reading League, including the report on Collaborative Literacy, by visiting https://lnkd.in/g8XAbRMA #TRLCurrReports #SoR #CollaborativeLiteracy #BeingAReader #BeingAWriter #scienceofreading

A key quote from NPR's recent reporting on #Louisiana reading success: "Before the state's reading training, Kathy Noel remembers observing teachers who were using what's known as "whole group instruction"—teaching the entire class one lesson, together. "It was, 'I'm going to read to you, you tell me what I read'," she explains. "We were just pretty much hoping they would read and, as you know, hope is not a strategy." That [whole group] approach can mask big differences among individual students: In a chorus of young voices, lower-performing children were simply echoes of better readers. Cady Caskey has taught at Provencal Elementary School in Natchitoches for 11 years, and says the science of reading training "changed tremendously" her instruction. "I have really transformed into more small-group instruction so that I'm able to tailor it per each individual child's needs." Read the story at https://lnkd.in/giKp4CD9

In our brand-new blog "Understanding Assessment: Are We Testing Wisely?" Linda Diamond clarifies different types of assessment and their respective purposes, all with the goal of helping literacy educators avoid the pitfalls that can come with even the best-intentioned testing. She reminds us not to assess for assessment's sake and then explores the following questions: - When should we assess? - How much should we assess? - Whom should we assess? - What types of assessments are necessary? https://lnkd.in/gv_mD_xZ #assessment #literacy #scienceofreading #universalscreener #readingteacher

We're still thinking about how much fun we had at Oakland Literacy Coalition's Literacy and Justice For All Symposium this weekend. We had amazing turnout at both our panel session with Oakland educational leaders, as well as our lunch and learn hosted with Michael Massa from the Office of Youth and Community Restoration! #lj4all
