Are you flexible and willing to learn?
With the vaccine in sight we can say that we are very near the end of COVID but one thing that has come out in the open is our skill to adapt. What matters for a species to survive and thrive is the extent of its adaptability to changing circumstances. At the workplace adaptability means being able to rapidly learn new skills and behaviours in response to such ever changing circumstances.
Today, more than ever before, adaptability is important because new technologies are evolving & companies are disrupting their well-established business models. As the MFG industry moves to Industry 4.0 we will need a workforce that is adaptable. This rings true for all cadres of the workforce. As an employer I typically look for adaptability when hiring new staff. Adaptibility as a skill is increasingly included in job descriptions due to its importance for growth and development within a role. Adaptability in project managers reflects the manager’s ability to integrate various moving parts of a project and deliver a quality product or service in a timely manner. Leaders that can adapt to change are motivated, not easily discouraged, and are usually more creative than the average employee.
Someone who demonstrates adaptability in the workplace is flexible and is able to respond effectively to their working conditions, even in situations where things do not go as planned. They typically work well on their own and with team members. So how do you demonstrate adaptability at the workplace?
Alternate Solutions
Adaptable people are able to bend when their first suggestion or preferred solution does not go over well. Being adaptable involves preparing backup, alternative options for discussion. Within a work team, presenting multiple ideas and showing acceptance when your primary choice is rejected helps you come across as a team player.
Accept Surprises
People who aren't adaptable tend to get stressed and uncomfortable when faced with new, unexpected and urgent projects. To show that you're a team player and adaptable, be willing to take on tasks or projects when urgency is key and the work is important to the organization.
Adopt New Roles
In highly evolving, fast-paced industries, company restructures are fairly common, with acquisitions and mergers happening on a regular basis. To show a commitment to your organization, use different types of adaptability skills to be cooperative and helpful when transitioning into a new or expanded role.
Thanks for the insights, really well articulated!!

3 年You have hit the nail on the head Rajesh. Our ‘Organizations of Future’ industry research also highlights that ‘adaptability’ is the key competencies of the Future. We have been working with various clients in enhancing their ‘Adaptability quotient’. Our finding indicates that adaptability requires us to change our ‘ways of working’ which is easier said than done. It’s a big mindset shift for individuals and leaders alike.?
