From idea to innovation—ColdSnap is redefining frozen treats, and Tufts alumni are leading the way! With several Jumbos on the team, this food tech startup is making waves. Last week, ColdSnap team members and Tufts alums Molly Ryan, A22, and Lyn Ferreira, F19, stopped by Tufts to speak about their career journeys and serve up some of ColdSnap's 2-minute ice cream! On March 4, DEC hosted the most delicious fireside chat to date - Jumbo alumna Molly Ryan and Lyn Ferreira brought two ColdSnap? machines and served 50+ bites of premium vanilla, chocolate, and salted caramel ice cream to a delighted audience prior to joining us for a fireside chat. ColdSnap was founded by serial entrepreneur and fellow Jumbo, Matthew Fonte, who earned his MSEM and Ph.D. from Tufts University. The company is revolutionizing the cold supply chain with an on-demand ice cream maker that produces a full serving of premium ice cream in just two minutes, without mess or cross-contamination, using pods that require no refrigeration. The same machine can also make frozen coffee drinks, protein shakes and more. We loved the fun facts that emerged in a lively fireside chat with Elaine Chen, showcasing the creativity of Jumbos. The idea for ColdSnap originated from a nighttime invention journal activity between Matt and his kids. Founded in 2018, the company launched in April 2024: a record speed for commercial-grade hardware product development. Matt’s deep expertise in metallurgy and engineering led the team to develop a novel mechanism built around shelf-stable pods that freeze the treat on demand. ColdSnap machines are now serving employees and associates at companies like LinkedIn, Best Buy, Mastercard, NBC Sports, NASCAR, TD Garden, and many more. Molly and Lyn also shared their personal stories of career pathfinding. Molly, A22, a Child Development and Psychology major with minors in Education and Entrepreneurship at Tufts, recounted how she attended a virtual career fair at the height of the pandemic, met Matt, and landed her first internship with ColdSnap. Working in person, she explored various roles as an operations intern. She loved to travel and excelled in working with people, which led her to sales. Less than three years after graduation, she is now a Senior Sales Executive at ColdSnap. Lyn, a 2019 graduate from The Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University with a Master of Science in Nutrition Science and Marketing, also took a wonderfully nonlinear career path. Originally a geology major, she held roles across various industries, including nonprofits, healthcare, educational organizations, and food and beverage. She initially joined ColdSnap as a food scientist, but soon discovered her passion for marketing. Her journey at ColdSnap highlights the flexibility of professional pathways that are hard to replicate in large, established enterprises. We truly appreciated having Molly and Lyn return to Tufts.
